Tim Heidecker is a Los Angeles-based comedian, musician, actor, writer, and director whose work has been a major influence on me. Had I not seen Awesome Show, Great Job! and Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie during my formative years, I’d probably be a very different person today. He’s currently doing a special tour across the USA where he’ll do stand-up comedy as his “No More Bullshit” character and perform some music with The Very Good Band. If you haven’t heard of Office Hours Live, it’s Tim’s morning call-in show / podcast that he does with DJ Douggpound and Vic Berger. They just had Bar Italia perform live on the show which is pretty cool. Lucky for us, Tim is here to tell us what he’s been into.

Chef John. It’s a popular cooking youtube channel. But me and my wife love it and use it when we wanna try new things, or remember how to make obvious stuff. He’s got a calm, soothing, kinda ASMR kind of voice and I sometimes just watch his videos to relax.

Real-time news footage of major events

I got hooked on another youtube thing, where people have uploaded real-time news coverage of major events, like the JFK Assassination. You can watch as if it was happening in real time, with hours going by with not a lot of information coming in. In an age where TV Technology was still so fresh, it’s captivating to watch the anchors and reporters struggle to deliver information.

Group Texts

I have 3 or 4 active group texts going in and out of my life: a little mini stream of in-jokes, long-running bits, and random nonsense. I’m so lucky to know funny people in my life and it's always a bit of fun relief to dip in, stir the pot and goof off about nothing and it keeps me connected to these people in a fun way.

Steve Martin’s first stand-up special

I found it on youtube - it was for HBO and filmed at the Troubadour with a few hundred people in there. He was famous but not a household name yet, I think. It’s masterful and made me fall in love with doing comedy again. You can do anything!
