Horsegirl is a Brooklyn-based band made up of Penelope Lowenstein, Gigi Reece, and Nora Cheng. Since forming in 2019, the trio has signed with Matador Records and released their acclaimed debut album, Versions of Modern Performance– a beautifully dissonant record that channels the energy of our favorite '80s and '90s indie rock. Their second record and latest release, Phonetics On and On, shifts toward a more indie pop/rock sound while retaining the band’s clever voice. You can check it out here. Plugging directly into the amp
Not only does it look awesome but it sounds awesome too. So streamlined, so uncomplicated. We always get excited when we go to a show and someone’s directly plugged into the amp.

“Artful Cats” section of the Smithsonian Public Domain
We’ve been longtime fans of scouring the Smithsonian Open Access domain. I recently came upon the “Artful Cats” section, which is a selection devoted to cat-related art. The people at the Smithsonian Public Domain are doing good work.

Antique hooked rugs
The visual world of our record (as well as the sound) was heavily inspired by quilt making and folk art in general. Every hooked rug I’ve seen possesses this distinct, strange quality… it must be difficult to render things accurately in the medium because animals always end up looking like vague, childlike representations of what they are. It’s really beautiful!

Benedict Cumberbatch sings Comfortably Numb
There’s a video of this on YouTube. BC’s delivery is really special. You can tell he’s a little out of his element— an actor in a rock scenario— but he stumbles upon his own unique brand of showmanship and gives a performance we return to time and time again... Great video to throw on the YouTube queue. Honorable mention: Sufjan Stevens sings Hotline Bling.

This is a beautifully minimal record. She makes strange arrangements and sounds feel effortless, intimate, and melodic. I can’t seem to stop playing this–– every room feels cooler when Anna Domino is on.
