Matthew Reed (aka TVBeaches) is an Asheville, North Carolina-based painter and visual artist. I found him through MJ Lenderman’s Perfectly Imperfect recommendations earlier this year and instantly became a fan of his surreal style. His paintings remind me a bit of Alex Colville, one of my all-time favorites, with how they can feel straight out of a Playstation 2 game. Reed’s work feature scenes from everyday modern life, but the characters are uncanny and shadowy, and the backdrops familiar yet unknown. Matthew made the art for the MJ single ā€œKnockin,ā€ and later, the cover of his acclaimed record Manning Fireworks. If you don’t already know, Asheville got hit very, very, hard by Hurricane Helene. Whole towns no longer exist, and he says they might not have running water until 2025. He’ll tell you more below, but please donate to Beloved Asheville (@belovedasheville) if you can, they need your help. Lucky for us, Matthew is here to tell us what he’s been into.

I live in Asheville and this area got absolutely smoked by Hurricane Helene.Ā  Parts of the area look like warzones. Whole towns were wiped off the map, lives were lost, infrastructure for basic necessities–obliterated. Much of the area is still without running water let alone drinkable water. Officials say the area might not have running water until 2025, drinkable water much later. If you can, donate to Beloved Asheville (@belovedasheville). Our town will need support for years to come to recover.

Landon’s music and Youtube channel is the perfect world of sincerity, comedy, and vulnerability.Ā  He’s a big inspiration for my art and for me as a person. For his music– I’d recommend the album ā€œFull Sendā€ and the single ā€œWalkin Slowā€. For his Youtube– I really like ā€œcrazy bloated bud light and I taste itā€ and ā€œYou're supposed to learn from the things you do, I reckonā€ https://www.youtube.com/@landongeorge5257/videosInsta: @landonridgehardygeorge

From the moment I saw her photography–I felt at home. Her work is holistic and redeems the forgotten in our society. Stacy’s photography leaves moral judgment out of the narrative and takes in what it means to be a human who never asked to be born in the first place.Ā  I spend a lot of time wondering how she seems to be at the right place at the right time to get her photos.

Julius’ paintings create a whole world I didn’t know could exist. I highly recommend his animated film ā€œMight of Young Enginesā€ on Youtube.Ā  It’s some of the most interesting animations I’ve seen.Ā  I don’t know how he does it.https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_Ca0RwtfP3OYN1IVvaHgTM5Pz74LEKIQ@hofmann_julius

2 people thrifting, hoarding, and reselling to avoid a 9 - 5. It’s amazing what they will do to save or earn $5. They’ll do things like bring gallon bags to stuff at the buffet or flatten and store hundreds of cereal boxes and chip bags– hoping they will sell for the big bucks for novelty someday.Ā  I love to think about what their apartments must look like.

A great way to practice your pitch while causing social unrest.Ā  Some personal favorites to harmonize with are: cars, blenders, and those HVAC systems.
