Momma is a New York City-based indie rock band composed of Etta Friedman, Allegra Weingarten, Aron Kobayashi Ritch, and Preston Fulks. The band started back in 2015 after founding members Etta and Allegra met in high school, and they’ve since released three albums. I discovered the band with the release of their last album, Household Name, an awesome record Pitchfork aptly described as “a cheeky spin on Gen-X slacker rock." The band just dropped their newest single “I Want You (Fever),” in anticipation of their next record, Welcome to My Blue Sky, which arrives this April. The band embarks on a headlining tour this spring, and you can find your tickets here. Lucky for us, Etta and Allegra are here to tell us what they’ve been into.

Small town mexican restaurants
Free chips and salsa (in a mortar and pestle). Combination plates. Murals on the walls. Margaritas with a mini corona in it. Sticky booths. String lights and candles. That’s what you’re looking for when you’re trying to find a Mexican restaurant to eat at on tour. We like to hit the ones in small towns because they’re cheaper and often the tastiest :p Our personal fav is Mexico Lindo in Miles City, Montana.

Guinness
What’s there to say about the best beer on planet earth… If you can’t get a draft guinness, we prefer the cans - stay away from the bottles because they don’t have nitro. Don’t worry about splitting the G every time you enjoy a nice warm Guinness - they’re meant to be savored…

Settlers of Catan
Settlers of Catan is an absolute must-have on tour. We pass the time in green rooms by playing a little game or two ;)  We like to set the scene with a nice warm Guinness, mood lighting, and playing a little bardcore (medieval renditions of contemporary music). Pro tip: while brick and wood are important resources to have in the beginning of the game, you’re going nowhere if you don’t have a good hay or ore supply.

Yerington, Nevada
Etta’s family is from a small town in Nevada called Yerington (population ~3,000). We try to make trips as often as we can. There’s not much to do besides drinking, gambling, shooting guns, riding a mule, and exploring the desert. Every time we go we feel really inspired and creative and at this point it feels like a second home to us. Shotout Marg, Serg, Bret and Mare <3

Spending money on self-care
It’s super important to treat yourself! Don’t feel ashamed for spending money on products that are long lasting, sustainable, and make you feel more confident in your day to day. Etta’s personal favorites are Aesop Deodorant (Geranium) and Wonderwood by CDG, and Allegra’s are Ouai hair products and Mrs. Meyer’s basil scents (candles, hand soap, room spray, and dish soap).

Voice Memos app
We looove using voice memos. The most obvious function is for recording song ideas and guitar parts, but we also use it when we need to send some juicy gossip that’s too long to type. We save all of our old voice memos even from high school, and like to dig through the archives when trying to find a song idea to work on.

Sock Hop by Asphalt Breeze
When we were in high school we got really high and were searching random song names on Spotify to see what we would get. We typed in “Asphalt Breeze” and stumbled up on a masterpiece called “Sock Hop.” We put this song on for each other every time we wanna make each other laugh. It’s kind of a Dean Blunt vibe. We still haven’t figured out if the song is a joke or not and they have 1 monthly listener on Spotify which is literally us. Let’s get those numbers up, whaddya say?

Making Custom Bingo Boards
We’re really outing ourselves here but every time we go on a support tour we make a Bingo board for the tour. The first person to win Bingo wins all of the buyouts for that day, or $80. Squares can range anywhere from “band dinner” or “seeing a movie in theaters” to random dares like planking in a band’s semi truck or pocketing a valuable tour emblem. It gets really competitive and there are things we’ve done that we’ll never speak of.
