Julian Cashwan Pratt is a NYC-based musician, best known for being the original member of Show Me The Body. Julian is also the founder of Corpus, a music platform and label that has been doing great community organizing since the summer of 2019, and offering so much to the city, from organizing youth initiatives, to providing studio residences, to coat drives. Currently, Julian’s on the Corpus Grows tour with Show Me The Body, and lots of other acts too. You can catch their New York show at Knockdown Center (tickets here) on November 2nd aka tomorrow, or check out their newest release here. Lucky for us, Julian’s here to tell us what he’s been into.

I grew up going to shows at ABC NO RIO. It was a co-op that had a zine library, dark room, print shop, backyard (important for the kids) and a room for holding shows. I hung out every Saturday for the matinés and saw hardcore, punk, and noise from around the world. It was the first scene I was a part of. The building was condemned years ago but it’s organizers continue to operate in exile and they deserve your support. The city promised them a new building but who knows… Apparently the New York Times does.

Blue number 1 is good for you. You can make any drink a blue drink and it becomes a better drink. Blue is good.

One of few remaining real ass spots in Manhattan’s Chinatown. Chinatown residents have for years given portions of their wages to gamblers who take busses to Atlantic City for the weekend in hopes to doubling their money. In the early hours of monday morning, gamblers that lose it all often end up at the Mee Sum Cafe. They will have their head in their hands next to a pot of chrysanthemum tea. Order a pot of the chrysanthemum tea. Be polite and speak with manners.

Huge Chabad outpost in crown heights. On Yumkippur everyone gets shitfaced on dollar wine. If you are not Jewish you may enjoy the scene on the block populated by Hasidic 15 year olds fighting, puking, and going to sleep. If you are Jewish enter the building and enjoy the traditional chanting and circle pit. Not for tourists.

Keep em white. It’s the only classy option. Grey and black are acceptable if the fit demands. Stop wearing crazy socks. No stripes, no polka dots, no direct to garment repetition logos. The only classy sock that is not a solid color is made by @latetomyfuneral. Be good to yourself.

Follow @pantherkingthedon. An older gentleman from East Baltimore that makes his own clothes. New fit post everyday. Real style and good work. Page must be run by his homie who intros every video and bigs up the fit. Their friendship off the net must be beautiful.

Every master I have ever met, martial artist, musician, marble mason, has remained a student. If you listen it’s easy tell who will have your back and who will not. My aunts says, when people tell you who they are, believe them! It will help you hear red flags and the fire alarm. People who do not know how to listen are confused. They will live alone and die alone. You do not need to take anyone’s advice about anything but it pays to know who is smart and who is not. Listen to yourself.
