This seems to be a pretty popular trend in publishing right now, but I don't care if it's trendy, I need books and movies about uncanny unsettling femininity! Specifically how it colors childhood and adolescent experiences. The most recent thing like this I've read is an older book, The Seas by Samantha Hunt in which a 19 year old girl believes she is a mermaid and is obsessively infatuated with an older man with PTSD. There's one line that is still lingering for me where the narrator is watching this man friend and thinks she wants him so badly she could cut a strip of flesh from his arm and eat it. (I know, cannibalism metaphor, also very big right now, but this was 2004!)
