John C. Reilly is a legendary LA-based Academy Award-nominated actor, comedian, and writer. This is a really special one for me as John's work on films like Step Brothers and Talladega Nights (underrated...) were some of the first comedies I remember loving as a kid. Eventually I became obsessed with his iconic Tim and Eric character Dr Steve Brule, and his amazing performances in Magnolia, Boogie Nights, Thin Red Line, and Hard Eight. His talents extend from the screen to the stage, and his current performance is a live vaudeville show titled Mister Romantic. More dates will be announced soon (you can keep up here) but in the meantime John is also selling the perfect Valentine's Day gift- a pack of Mr. Romantic Chocolate Marshmallows & Truffles. He's truly one-of-a-kind, and lucky for us, John is here to tell us what he's been into.

Mister Romantic Chocolates by Fine and Raw

This pick is really just a way to share my new show Mister Romantic. It’s a show I created out of hope and despair. It’s all about love and what it means to love and be loved. It was created to generate empathy (more on that below). It also has singing, dancing, mime work, audience interaction and lots of flirting. Oh and there are some wonderful chocolates we made for you.

Suzanne Kaufmann Mallow Blossom Bath

People might be surprised by this but I’m a real bath slut. I take one almost every day. It’s just such a great place to ruminate and relax. I have played Stanley Kowalski but the truth is I’m more like Blanche DuBois. I’ve thought of so many great ideas in the bath too while listening to music. Maybe my baths are so wonderful because I use this very fancy bubble bath. It’s pricey but worth it and so are you. I buy it at my friend’s store in Atwater.

Live Theater and Music

My whole life has been spent in and around theaters. They are my church. These days it seems like we take performers a bit for granted. But for every stream online there is a person who had the guts to get up onstage and perform in some theater somewhere. My two favorite places in Los Angeles for live performances are Largo at the Coronet and The Elysian Theater. Go to either place any night and you will very likely find something wonderful and surprising. Don’t you want that?

Have you ever wanted to feel like a bird when it flies? Well there is a way to do it without risking death. Roller skating! Glide around on a wood oval and experience pure bliss. You’ll feel like a kid again. Or a bird. It’s a win win. The Moonlight Rollerway in Glendale is one of the best roller rinks in the world. Go on Rainbow Night (aka LGBT night) and you’ll hear the best music among the most lovely people. Don’t be afraid of gay. It won’t hurt you.

EMPATHY

“The world is so distressing and cruel right now, especially with what our leaders are saying, it’s almost like comedy and joy is like a flower that needs to be cared for, and it needs to be in a peaceful garden where someone is watering it and taking care of it. I think the answer is empathy, getting people to recognize what binds all human beings together, regardless of their economic status or their race or where they have come from or where they are going, empathy is what is going to get us out of the mess that we are currently in.” I said that a few years ago to an interviewer. It holds very true today. Empathy is not overrated. It’s what will make you a better person. The Union Station organization helps the homeless and that’s a good place to start. Pay it forward. One day you might need some kindness.
