Amorelle is one of the city’s best painters, without a doubt in my mind. Her work lately studies space, and her strength is in color. I’m floored by her eye & style, reminiscent of many great painters and poets, and always capturing that something both present and infinite. She’ll be making great work for a long time, she’ll be lasting, the crosswalks and stop signs will start to look like her pieces.

Art is about more than identity, can allow us to transcend identity, but having been raised in the art world of the 90s, when painting was dying and women weren’t given the wall space they deserved, it’s a joy to watch femme painters rise to the top of the pile creatively and financially. I am lucky enough to cherish works by Jenna Gribbon, Jocelyn Hobbie, Kyle Staver, Ellen Birkinblit and my dear friend Issy Wood. I am currently obsessed with Larissa De Jesus Negron, Petra Cortright, Lucy Bull, Robin F. Williams, Somaya Critchlow, Gina Beavers and Cynthia Talmadge. It’s a lifetime dream to have a massive Lisa Yuskavage to wake up to (though I do have a print she gave me for my 26th birthday when I had a Soul Cycle party and everyone was mad except Lisa, who kicked all our millenial asses on the bike.)

for overall artists, i really enjoy the body of work by photographer renée cox. i love her takes on representation and her unapologetic nature. i wasn’t much of a photography girl before her, but i get it now. i also really enjoy the paintings of oda iselin sønderland and the mood she’s able to capture with them. and i can’t forget the works of aya takano! i love the world she’s crafted and the figures that come out of it. she reminds me that i’m a woman but also still a girl if that makes sense. for favorite contemporary works of art in general, that’s even harder as i have so many! for now, i’ll choose kiki smith’s 1996 piece “constellation” (pictured here). but i could go on forever.

I’m drawn to the Lex Marie’s bold use of color and deep exploration of identity and memory. My favorites are her flag pieces.

My favorite poet Frank O’Hara reading one of his most famous poems. It’s a lovely, modern love poem, and something I return to when I need to feel a little more romance in my life.

Austin is the photog I keep on retainer. The cowboy of cowboy coffee, he has an impeccable eye for photo and lighting. A former trophy winner himself, he’s been re-entering the world of rodeo, studying the culture and showing you the heart below the red neck.

A film that someone called a “tone poem”??? about the few things in life we get to really care about. It’s a sullen, deeply hurt performance from Nic, fighting for the principle of the things he loves. It felt a bit like Roadrunner, the Bourdain flick, in its celebration of the hard work us food and bevvies do- an insight into how we think and feel about our jobs. It resonated with me, it felt like relief.
