This is a movie I’d never heard of until recently, but it seems like it should be a stone-cold classic. (Perhaps it IS—my film education is spotty.) It is about a mid-1980s era Bad Girl who loves sex and is angry and lives on the Irish seaside. You can get it on various streaming services. I’m a sucker for any piece of art about an irrepressible wench. good poster too!

First saw this when I was 16 and never been the same. It’s such a comfort movie, depicts the 90s nyc club scene well, and I find it fascinating it being the first movie to premiere on the internet. Fun fact: when I was a first year college student and was sad af, I watched Party Girl cuz my campus was doing a screening of the film, and throughout the week all I could just hear was the soundtrack in my head whilst walking through the city.

I'd been hearing about THE RED SHOES for years and never got round to watching it - the picture of Moira Shearer staring, wild-eyed, and so intense, at the camera was captivating and it was always on my radar for that reason. Finally, towards the end of last year, I watched it, and JESUS. It is without doubt one of the best films I have ever seen. Despite being shot in the 40s, it feels so contemporary - the colour, the camera movement - and you can feel its DNA all over so many of the films that came after it. It's also the reason Martin Scorsese wanted to be a filmmaker - he was obsessed by it as a nine year old; it's why he uses red so much. It is, unquestionably, required viewing. It also really disturbs the idea that British cinema is all kitchen sink realism. I love the vision, the ambition. As a British filmmaker myself, I love that this makes me feel seen in our cinematic history.

watched this last week and was blown away by linda manz. not only a fantastic teen performance (rare) but a shock of a performance period. she's fiery and tender despite herself. great voice. woulda changed my life to see this at 13. worth watching just for her but also for this one scene, won't spoil, with dennis hopper & a bottle of whiskey that is maybe one of my favorite things i've seen in a film.

Speaking of Iceland! This is an Icelandic alcohol that tastes exactly like rye bread. The flavor is both herbal and cozy—I think of it as “upholstered vodka.” Tastes refreshing in summer and life-affirming in winter. No clue why it isn’t more popular.

Whenever someone is like “I haven’t read a book in 5 years, what should I read?” I suggest this cult classic—because it is experientially easy but conceptually rich, and thus will effortlessly adhere to your attention and satisfy your urges. It is a Hollywood novel about an asshole (timeless genre!) who surfs the wave of power and excess until it all goes Terribly Awry. The book was published in 1988 so it is dated in fun ways but also timeless in the ways that matter. (Robert Altman made a movie of it but the book is better—which is saying a lot, because the movie rules!)

...and not letting it stop you. I haven’t been the same since I read this post, but I continue to garnish drinks with these neon accessories.
