If youā€™re anything like me, your body feels completely separate from your mind, which feels completely separate from your heart, and most of your internal dialogue is you getting mad at yourself for doing some shit that another part of you disapproves of. Every part of us matters, but if weā€™re often neglecting one of these guys itā€™s definitely the vessel that houses this mess to begin with. Your body needs sleep bro! Youā€™d be surprised at how many of these voices start to quiet when you actually let your body do its thing once in a while and decide when it wants to wake up. And you canā€™t feel an ounce of guilt for not setting an alarm, otherwise this whole experiment is negated. If you really wanna wake up early, then go to bed early (Iā€™m leaving this piece of advice in writing so I can finally learn it myself).

I sleep way too late and spend so much of my time groggy and butthurt about missing the morning. I want this to finally be the year where I wake up at a reasonable time (read: not 10:30am) and have hours to myself to read, stretch, and just hang before I start my work day. Because I work PST hours from New York (and live with a night owl grad student), I have no forcing function to give me any sense of discipline beyond meeting my lax work requirements. But most nights past 1am Iā€™m many pages into Google reading the same tips to become a morning person and capitalize on the free mornings I could have with my shifted schedule.

I canā€™t call it a morning routine because i work night shifts so i wake up around 9/10 am. However , i had to trick my mind to be able to wake up In shape. Letā€™s go straight to the point : - to be able to wake up you should sleep, ironic Right ? Well hear me out, you canā€™t expect yourself to wake up at the same time as your alarm if you barely had your beauty sleep, sleeping early = waking up in shape ( yes i said in shape and not early, focus on the healthy sleep rather than waking up earlier). - to be able to sleep peacefully you should prepare it (Our elders were right, itā€™s that god damn phone) - i once happen to experience an internet outage for a full 24h so i couldnā€™t use my phone or laptop to watch anything, guess what happened ? I slept in the dark, with no noise around 2am, when did i wake up ? 8 am !! Without even feeling tired! - so NO screen before bed time ! Try it slowly (10mins - 15mins - 30mins - until u can ro a full hour) - the no screen time doesnā€™t mean staying in the dark tho ! Dim your lights as much as possible, read something (PAPER ONLY - no ebook no digital distraction) 5/10/20 pages doesnā€™t matter, just prepare your mind for peace and no distractions. - donā€™t overthink your night overthinking, use it to your advantage, instead of thinking something that stressed you, switch it to ā€œmanifestingā€œ your future, think about your next trip, imagine yourself already in that city/country, where you wanna go etc ā€¦ (trust me in no time you will fall asleep) - one in position, keep your eyes closed, donā€™t open them no matter what, remember no distractions are allowed. Once you wake up, depends on you, create your own morning routine. - to wake up, stupid as it seems but TALK to yourself, yes ! Talk to yourself, say (i am awake i am awake i am awake, in 3 i will get off my bed, 1,2,3 and GET UP) - NO phone at all cost ! (avoid that dopamine hit please ! Stay in the silence ! Feel your body, smell the fresh morning air by opening the window etcā€¦) - Drink Water first thing in the morning! -They call it internal shower or smth like that lol i donā€™t know- but it helps get you a bit more awake too. - wash your face, donā€™t be harsh on yourself, use warm water to wake up slowly, consistency is key, slowly you will switch to cold water. - maybe even take a fresh shower ! Showers help a loot to get the needed energy. - prepare your breakfast, try to avoid anything sweet tho, keep it healthy and simple. With those simple steps, you can add more and more to build your morning routine, you can add : - walking - cycling - reading a book - gym - listening to slow music as u prepare your breakfast and lunch for work Etc ā€¦

wake up later & sleep earlier get a sunrise alarm clock if you need to rise earlier than the real sun think of it as hibernating ā€” give into the extra rest and coziness your body craves and your mind/soul/emotions will follow suit (for the most partā€¦..obvi seasonal depresh is a natural thing, but it sounds like you have a good handle on it!)

This January, when your unadjustable New York apartment heat is cranked so high that you can smell the lead paint melting off the walls, take a step outside onto your stoop for a breath of that crispy ass chimney-scented air, and remember DBG sent you there.

Research is the number one deterrent when it comes to making art, because itā€™s the fastest way to see if what you want to make ā€œhas been done beforeā€ (thatā€™s in air-quotes because we all know deep down that NOTHING has been done the same way that weā€™re doing it). Imagine the art that would flow out of you without any sort of ā€œbut what will THEY think of itā€ hang-ups. Thatā€™s really what we all want to see, right? We want to see the most surprising, most vulnerable, most specific-to-your-mind-right-now type shit. The more you care about that one person that kinda did something sorta like it one time, the less youā€™re gonna make anything. You can always research after the fact, if youā€™re really hung up on itā€¦ but at least you will have made something! Making things feels amazing.
