For the past 6 months I've been enjoying listening to music while I walk around less and less. It's just been less satisfying and more boring. Then today I got new $20 headphones and realized I don't like music less my old headphones were just broken and I couldn't hear most of the music. It's like when you're feeling down on yourself and you get a haircut and feel better. If you're feeling out of it with music maybe just get new headphones.

I thought I could get by with inexpensive earbuds. But I bought nice over ear headphones for video editing and, the first time I listened to my favorite band on them, I learned how much I was missing. Falling asleep listening to an album on these is one of my small pleasures.

i lost my airpods a while ago and because i don’t like wearing my huge over-ear, noise-cancelling headphones all the time, i got some classic wired headphones from apple for like 20 bucks. the audio quality probably isn’t amazing compared to other headphones, but where it lacks in audio quality (and practicality, frankly), it makes up for in sentimentality. wired headphones can take so many different shapes and they allow you to hear the music around you, like kids playing after school, couples bickering about stupid stuff, etc, etc. also, when it gets cold out, i love putting them under the hoodie or sweater i’m wearing and having them stick out and hang at the collar :,)

i’ve had this pair since 2019 so it’s been with me through so much. i’ve now been listening to nothing but the sounds of silence and the voices in my head for a few weeks now, but i can hear beautiful bird songs whenever i go on cold winter walks with my dog. i can talk to my sweet elderly neighbor without having to pause Emergency Intercom.
i honestly do miss listening to music and podcasts, but i feel like maybe i needed a break from the constant escapism.
