I watched it sometime last week. It’s been eating at me ever since. Elliot Gould walks through a feverishly shot world with a cool that permeates in my head. With dialogue that is messy and mesmerising and characters that walk the line of plausibility and absurdity, Altman's LA is hedonistic dream. Him and Gould make being an out of place loser a lot cooler than it is.
maybe my favourite Robert Altman movie - based on a Raymond Chandler book, Elliot Gould plays legendary PI Phillip Marlowe as he lounges around 70s California looking for the answers (and his cat). Impeccable character and plot writing that tastefully unfolds itself at a medium pace. Absolutely must watch for fans of Inherent Vice.
and maybe do some drugs that suit the scene. the long goodbye, bob & carol & ted & alice, nashville, california split - just something about cruising around in a convertible through the smog. seems like it was a fun time to be alive
promotes positivity
pro tip, dreams don’t always make sense - so when weird/bad stuff happens, you can shrug it off and be like wow what a weird dream bro 🤷
