Bumping an old recommendation because I've been very Mazzy Star brained for the last week Perfectly Imperfect Editor Recs on January 5th, 2023 I was searching for music similar to Mazzy Star and ended up falling into the "Paisley Underground" rabbit hole. This genre is more or less 1980s LA's garage-y psychedelic answer to Velvet Underground. There are a ton of great bands to check out here like The Dream Syndicate, The Three O'Clock, Green on Red, and Game Theory. None of them sound much like Mazzy Star, which was my original goal, but they're all insanely sick. I've been playing The Dream Syndicate album The Days of Wine and Roses basically non-stop.

90% of my friends are musicians so boy do I have recs for you!! All of these musicians are so talented and worth your curiosity. You're going to have the nichest recommendations when your friends ask you what you've been listening to recently. I tried to hyperlink each artist but it's not working so I made a playlist instead. I'm realising now writing this there's kind of two vibes here, a kind of post rock/grunge one and a chill guitar indie one. Mouse Teeth (you already know mouse), genre-blending poetic goodness. FFO: Mitski, PJ Harvey The People Assembly, krautrock/post-rock chaos, best live shows, FFO: Fugazi, Shellac Sister Bliss, a Transatlantic Leicester/New York collaboration, FFO: Mac Demarco, Beach Fossils Hex Poseur, garage rock/grunge/punk goodness, FFO: Bikini Kill, White Stripes Earls, Birmingham punk (no longer playing 💔 but the singer is now in Mouse Teeth's band, drummer is in Gudness and other two are in Fruit), FFO: Idles, Bob Vylan National Opera, indie electronica dance pop, FFO: LCD Soundsytem, Metronomy Dad Jokes, feel good indie, FFO: Alvvays, MJ Lenderman Heart Sauce, summery synthy guitar indie, FFO: Hard Life, Faye Webster CJ Pandit, indie singer/songwriter, FFO: Billie Martin, Willie J Healey Dum Language, guitar indie rock who's sharpied name you will see everywhere, FFO: Kagoule, Palma Violets Dusker, mathy post-punk, FFO: Protomartyr, Polvo Sun Dog, shouty garage, FFO: Tropical Fuck Storm, Gilla Band Chief Springs, harmonic indie folk rock, FFO: Big Thief, The National Courtney Askey, gothic folk/grunge singer songwriter, ME lol, FFO: Nick Cave, PJ Harvey

A few hours of scrolling on here today has done more for my taste in music than years and years of Sp*tify algorithms. Highly recommend turning to the PI.FYI community for something fresh. That in mind here's a couple of bands I really like that I have had to introduce to like 90% of people, I've tried to make sure all of these artists have under 100k monthly listeners on Spoofy: - Blue Deputy: indie dream rock who will absolutely become my favourite band the moment they release their first EP (they keep promising it's in the works!!!!) favourite tracks: Cypress, New Jersey, Lucky Star (that one's not on streaming yet!) - Lesbian Bed Death: Gothic Hard Rock/Metal that packs a hell of a punch, they're so much fun. Favourite tracks: Maria, Your Love Makes Everything Worse, She Loves Lilith - Sean Solomon: He has that one song on tiktok where he plays along to VCR recording of the music video (that I believe he drew and animated himself)/backing track. That one song is Car Crash and it's just quite lovely, really - The Man the Myth the Meatslab: more acoustic midwest emo I found on TikTok lmao. effortlessly, i feel everything is eerily similar to Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl but imo not in a way that feels like a ripoff, it actually elevates the song for me. It's like a spin on a similar theme from a different perspective - Chloe Slater: working class, indie, feminist indie rock anthems for disenfranchised people who just wanna dance. favourite songs: Fig Tree, Sucker, Thomas Street - Life to Experience: this is kind of a memey one bc their album The Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads appears on a tonne of people's cringe/bad album covers lists, but guys. Please. I promise you it is genuinely one of the best Prog Rock albums of all time it rules so hard. Please try it. this is not an original take but it IS a correct take. - Wax Fang: this band had one song appear in an episode of American Dad of all places, and whoever put it there should have immediately been given a raise and creative control of the entire show. The song they used is called Majestic, and the album it's from, La La Land, is an incredible rock album.

tomorrow PI.FYI launches to the public this project is the result of thousands of hours spent coding everything from scratch after I got laid off six months ago no thiel-bucks or weirdo outsider money, just a pure desire to make something fun and true to Perfectly Imperfect’s day one goal of helping people find new things from real human beings, not algorithms or AI a pure labor of love that I’ve been quietly plotting for two years and it’s completely self-funded from my (rapidly) dwindling savings account so thank you for coming along for this weird ride 🫶 let's see where it goes
