This is my staple weekend meal. It’s a tiny diner on Delancey and Essex, and has been a New York City institution since the ‘70s. It has an extensive and creative menu, but I think on your first visit you should get the mac ‘n’ cheese pancakes and eat them with syrup and hot sauce. A great place to take a few select friends (max 4 to table), or dine alone and chat up your counter neighbour.

Cozy diner for basics - its restricted menu and limited hours keep it focused and like a little treat in the morning. It doesn't fall into the trap of "trying to do too much" when you only want a full breakfast, grits, some black coffee, and a slice of whatever two pies they're currently making. being home in massachusetts im surrounded by these joints. the food is always average, but that's not the point. it's about the consistency, the booths, the drip coffee, the plastic cups and ceramic mugs, the vinyl tables, the yellow paper receipt, and yes, the passable food. never had a bad conversation or experience with a loved one at a greasy spoon. also a great place to eat alone and read a newspaper like a little old chap. what you order at a diner says a lot about you

I love diners. I love eating in them, drinking in them, hanging out in them, writing them and even hosting comedy shows in them. Being in a diner really makes you feel like you’re on the set of a movie. I am sad that so many of them continue to close, or are at risk of closing, so I do my best to visit as much as I can. I like 7th Avenue Diner in Park Slope, Triple Decker Restaurant in Greenpoint and Kellogg’s in Williamsburg where me and my friend Johnny host a monthly comedy show.

Spend $70 for a yearly pass and watch many, many pretentious films (on film!) in the heart of the East Village, in a beautiful brick movie theater. It’s such a steal. We are very blessed.

When I make pancakes at home I line then with blueberries, basically leaving no empty space. You can hold them in your hand to eat, and because there’s so much blueberry, syrup becomes unnecessary. They’re both tart and sweet. The perfect food.
