Our first "smartphone agnostic" director. Tourism is great. It's like a Vagabond style docufiction about 2 J-Fashion IG baddies vlogging in Singapore, getting separated, getting lost, feeling isolated, posting cute pics, and discovering the hospitality of Islam and Abrahamic faith. Hard to get at in words but does an amazing job of portraying the vibelessness of Singapore while retaining its own vibe.
Yamato (California) is also wonderful. Battlerap Psalm against foreign military presence in Japan. A REBEL FOR TRADITION. For fans of Azealia Banks, U.S. Go Home, the joie de vivre of a Taco Bell on an American Military base, psychedelia, the angst of a young woman whos brother is building an app to save the family.

Masaaki Yuasa is a nearly unparalleled stylistic storyteller whose work you can spot from a mile away, and Mind Game was an early masterpiece of his that I return to every year – there’s really nothing else like it that I’m aware of. Whereas other Yuasa projects explore issues like having sex with monsters to jazz music (Kemonozume), selling your memories to upper-class space-Frenchmen (Kaiba), or how delightful it is to be drunk in the summer (The Night is Short, Walk on Girl), Mind Game is a crazy beautiful smash-up of mediums that follows 20-yr old incel and artist Nishi as he tries to take ownership over his own life.

the song is fine too but the visuals are stunning. directed and written by Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli, this thing looks like a trailer for what could have been a very solid movie. it's got cyberpunk, it's got angels, it's got chase scenes, I watch this as a standalone work tbh

private screening at my favorite independent theater this weekend...by chance, not design. obsessed w Kei Fujiwara, industrial soundtrack by Ishikara Chu, and the choppy experimental editing....going to get really into cyberpunk and body horror now

it's like a river flowing in the opposite of the culture. it's very important to participate in the counterculture and participate in public because the culture is a toilet but the counterculture is pure and true. anything can be the counterculture if it's countercultural. i believe the fast casual bowl restaurant to be one of our greatest countercultural institutions today simply for the fact that so many of our countercultural warriors are eating fast casual grain or salad bowls in order to fuel up for their day jobs.
