Iā€™ve never understood why this band is relatively obscure in America. Amber Webber is one of my favorite contemporary vocalists; her voice has body and ooze and just generally captures that forlorn hauntedness I like in a singer. ā€œAntonia Janeā€ is a song I return to annually, then listen to on repeat for a few weeks. Their latest album, Nostalgia Killer, has another song that sounds like an instant classic called ā€œWrecked.ā€ Lightning Dust started out as an offshoot of Black Mountain, who have more psychedelic leanings and who are worth checking out as well. Basically, take a figurative musical detour to Vancouver BC and see whatā€™s going on.

Love & Rockets, cuz Iā€™m old and they jam in some weird unforgettable jams. jungle law, teardrop collector. The album is a must. ā€œI don't know what color your eyes are, babyĀ  But your hair is long and brown šŸŽ¤ā€ Lydia Loveless, savior of cowpunk. the lingerie cowboy. They are an indestructible machine. ā€œcanā€™t change meā€, it just is. ā€œšŸŽ¼ Because if people knew, they would call me a fool I wish they knew it was true: Jesus was a wino, tooā€ Alejandro Escovedo. If heā€™s in town, we go. He reminds me off an old story Kiss tell about getting started. At 73 Alejandro will still tear the roof off an empty room. And the full ones are abuzz in adrenaline that keeps the 20-something to 80-something crowd he draws on their feet. Heā€™s the old school punk rock rolled in smart Americana Rock ā€˜n Roll. Heā€™s an embodiment of Austin City Limits magic ā¤ļø ā€œI was drunk, I was down, I was wandering around my bedā€¦ I calLEd out your nameā€¦ šŸŽ¶ā€ Metric. The art of doubt. ā€œIā€™m so rich, everything is free.ā€ šŸŽµ I love Canadian rockers - they know how to skewer bullshite and this is one of many in their now lengthy catalog that plays electric rock as loud as your punk-kid-soul needs it to go. When I blow the speakers on the family van my wife is gunna be pissed but, what can I say. I canā€™t put the good speakers in the house šŸ¤£ When the generally more subtle, and way more analog, Cowboy Junkies & Neko Case need a shake-up this is one of the Metric Albums that gets a spin.

I can't stand music discourseā€”particularly of the "rock is dead" or "rock is back" varietyā€”because I find that nobody has decent taste, and often they're not even aware of the best bands making music now. I feel like most adults have a period of their life when they discover a lot of music and then they give up searching. I'm relentless when it comes to discovering new favorite bands. I don't think there has ever been a time with as much incredible and timeless guitar-driven music as right now. Nothing, Teenage Wrist, Soft Kill, Ruby Haunt, Ski Lodge, cursetheknife, Jorge Elbrecht, Narrow Head, Sports Coach, Gold Star, Choir Boy, Better Person, Private World, Peel Dream Magazine, Salem, Heavenward, Broken Head, Sweet Trip, Valleyheart, Sculpture Club, Winter, Deafheaven, No Joy, Sheer Mag, Day Wave, Roseville, Kitten, Glare, Amusement Parks On Fire, Soft Blue Shimmer, Black Marble, Provoker, Anonymous Club, Holiday Sidewinder, House of Harm, Superbloom, Softcult, Tigers Jaw, Second Skin, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, NewDad, Failure, Beachy Head, The Chain Gang of 1974, Cindy, Seer Believer, Fearing, and VR Sex are the names of some current bands you should probably be listening to that come to mind. And Drab Majesty's The Demonstration, a melodramatic tragedy pageant in honor of the Heaven's Gate suicides, remains the best album of the last decade. If you want something more electro, go for Real Lies, these two Islington dudes who make the most tasteful club pop since the Pet Shop Boys. Their recent single "Late Arcades" was written as an ode to their old schoolmate, Richard Spencer, who vanished years ago. That shit makes me cry. Ā (Especially in the car.)

Albums Chelsea Wolfe - Unknown Rooms (Flatlands, Virginia Woolf Underwater) Chelsea Wolfe - Pain is Beauty PJ Harvey - Rid of Me (legit got jump scares when I first listened...) Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter - Saved! Julee Cruise - Floating Into the Night (maybe not typically seen as creepy or gothic, but I think there's a bit of those...might be conflating "strong atmosphere" with "strong atmosphere which is specifically <gothic>", idk) Nicole Dollanganger - Natural Born Losers (Poacher's Pride, White Trashing, In the Land, You're so Cool) Elysian Blaze - Levitating the Carnal; Beneath Silent Faces (think I should make a separate post for this ... not spoken about enough imo) Songs Poppy Jean Crawford - Glamorous Kate Bush - Waking the Witch; Hounds of Love; Under Ice (as above ... atmospheric ... Is it dark and gothic? To me, sort of) Marissa Nadler - Janie in Love; Divers of the Dust Emily Jane White - Behind the Glass Bat for Lashes - What's a Girl to Do? Saram12saram - Fish Wish Kiss; Cripple Holly Henry - Crawl; Roswell Mercy Necromancy - Cruel; Bunny Poppy - Holy Mountain

Real Life, Modern Romance, Lost in America, Defending Your Life. That quartet of films possesses so much DNA that I witness inĀ todayā€™s comedy. I love Brooksā€™ melding of earnest, trenchant, and silly. Heā€™s always exploring the pitfalls of idealism and exposing self-awareness as a curse. Yet his films arenā€™t cynical, theyā€™re heartfelt.

I know, itā€™s obnoxious to be part of this trendy bandwagon. For all I know, youā€™re someone who has called to complain about the sound of people playing the game, which Iā€™ve heard happens in certain neighborhoods. I get it. Itā€™s essentially very loud and very big ping pong. If I can make one argument for taking up the sport, Iā€™d say itā€™s that the age range of people with whom you hang out will expand greatly. The other day, I played with a 10-year old, a 30-year old, and a 70-year old. Plus, itā€™s a real-life interaction, and itā€™s easy to come up short on those sometimes.

If someone asked me to list the greatest living American novelists, Ward would be in my Top 5. Sing, Unburied, Sing is an absolute stunner, both lived-in and otherworldly, such aching and beautiful prose. And Ward can be blunt too, evincing the steps and steepness of life. Her most recent novel, Let Us Descend, is profound and painful, the story of an enslaved girl, of conjured humanity despite brutal circumstances. I love how Wardā€™s stories fuse generations, those living and beyond; Iā€™m always transfixed as a reader.
