A singer-songwriter from the 70s whose music is so wonderfully weird. She weaved elements of folk, jazz, and gospel.
My fave songs from her are My Man on Love and Loping Along Thru The Cosmos.

Vocalist Patty Waters straddles approaches that are something like a lounge jazz and a vocal avant-gardism, singing to stripped down instrumentals playing familiar then dissonant intervals, often ones that feel just slightly off of what you expect—the effect is something like holding an old photograph in your hand and noticing the material distortions. What sounds sentimental in a Nat King Cole or King Moody croon, becomes haunting or grin under Patty Water’s command.
I especially get that effect from this album, College Days, in which her voice warmly vibrates at the center, with the instruments falling into the background. It’s perfect rainy day music from her, but this album also has a lot of her screaming and using her voice in a remarkable way, it definitely draws comparison to someone like Meredith Monk, where breathe voice and tone become their own force. This track Wild is the Wind is the noisiest and reminds me of Arthur Russell at some points.

i am a big fan of A Complete Unknown, and each time I have seen it I am forced to go deeper down a Joan Baez and Bob Dylan rabbit hole. For how revered she was in 60s and 70s, I don't think Joan Baez CURRENTLY received the attention she deserves. She has an unreal voice and subdued style that is as comforting as a conversation with an old friend. I am very happy this new movie is bringing some further attention to her so people (like me because I barely knew about her before) can become fans! Songs i recommend: The Water is Wide, Don't Think Twice It's Alright, Farewell, Angelina, Donna Donna

a post-disappearance release from a #mother of the singer-songwriter genre about love, the self, and life’s silly happenings. a mysterious and powerful artist with a penchant for humor and sadness, and the writer of one of the most relatable quotes i’ve ever heard: “human society fascinates me & awes me & fills me with grief & joy; i just can't find my place to plug into it.”
highlights: talkin like you (two tall mountains), man in the sky, there is a vine, i have considered the lillies
