It may or may not translate but this is not simply a film it is a trove of Australian iconography. If you have lived in or visited Australia you will have heard countless references to to lines of dialogue in this film that are so rooted into the lexicon that people say them without understanding it's a reference. I saw this again in December in a theatre full of older Australians and every joke hit. But it's not all laughs there are tender moments between the Kerrigan's as they fight against the man for their home. It's an embodiment of what it means to be an Aussie battler and finding joy and pleasure in the simple things. We know we're not flash but isn't that the point? You laugh when you hear an iconic line firstly because it's funny but secondly because it reminds you of all the times you've said or heard that line or something very close to in the real world and although we're not a perfect country but I wouldn't want to call any other place home.

this movie is an absolute classic!!! A master class in near dystopian, end of world, love story with a side of eccentrics that can only be found in films made over ten years ago. Is it cringe?? HELL NO. its a sign of those times update: it also feels SO american in a way thats so comforting. I miss the unbridled patriotism sometimes
