Science fiction space opera with a mordant sense of humour, set in a far future Fully Automated Space Communism type setting. Like a gritter and sexier Star Trek, but in a good way.

The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress flips the usual robot-takeover trope on its head with Mike, a supercomputer who becomes sentient and decides, instead of ruling humanity, to join the fight for lunar independence. Born from Earth’s practice of shipping prisoners to the Moon with barely enough to survive, the colony has grown into a tight-knit, self-sufficient society. When Earth’s exploitation pushes them too far, Mike and the colonists band together in a daring revolution full of political intrigue, clever strategy, and high-stakes rebellion. It’s a visionary story that’s as thrilling as it is thought-provoking.

when i pulled up to the bar and saw Ethan reading this is I said “what is that?” and then said “what year is this?” Anyway, it’s a cool sci-fi lit mag with coupons and cut-and-mail subscription. Feels very good for fans of PI’s reading group and Left Hand of Darkness in particular. (I read a story about what sexual autonomy means in an age of complex body/mind modification ((which we should all aspire to.))

dude who wrote 2001. I dunno what to say except that it is one of the best sci-fi pieces or art i'v ever consumed.i like sci-fi as analogy / modern mythology. the most popular political critiques like star wars and matrix are subliminally about issues swept under the rug in mainstream discourse, but allowed and celebrated in fantasy setting, we see it explode with popularity.with real life or non-fiction we like to pretend things we don't like aren't happening, but we can face them in sci-fi.

A lot of the stuff that gets recommended for beginners actually sucks, imo. If you want to get an idea of what it's about, try these: Edmund Wilson, To the Finland Station Andrew Collier, Marx: A Beginner's Guide Michael Heinrich, An Introduction to the Three Volumes of Karl Marx's Capital C.L.R. James, Modern Politics

My favourite fruit. Incredible taste and texture and you gotta do all this work to free the gem-like seeds.

For my money (not a lot tbh) she's one of the best filmmakers working today. Her movies are lyrical but never sentimental, morally serious but never self-righteous. She is especially interested in themes about the body, desire, colonialism. My favourites are Beau Travail, Trouble Every Day, and White Material.
