Easily one of my favourite movies of 2023/2024. Directed by J.A Bayona (who also directed The Impossible with Tom Holland), the film depicts a tragic historical event with so much respect for not just the plane crash survivors, but also the people who died and made it possible for the rest to make it out alive. Don't get me wrong, the Ethan Hawke 1993 version of this story is great, but this movie really takes it to another level while feeling like an immersive homage rather than an inflated dramatization.
Other things that make this movie stunning:
a) The acting is SUPERIOR with a cast of relatively unknown Latinx actors who look incredibly similar to the actual survivors.
b) The SFX-VFX integration is so seamless. For me, when it comes to depicting accidents or intense catastrophes on film, practical effects that can be enhanced with digital elements are one of the best ways of creating cinematic believability. It's a breath of fresh air when everything relating to action and stunts nowadays has that Marvel-CGI veil of visual flatness.
c) The behind the scenes for this movie is fantastic. From the casting process all the way to the construction of the plane fuselage, you can see how much hard work, research and dedication went into this project. It's phenomenal.
This movie is guaranteed to make you cry and smile at the same time. āļøāļøāļøāļøāļø

Perfectly executed, believable near-future apocalyptic (which is the best genre IMO) story thatās really bleak on its premise but then also a hopeful story. Acting is great, aesthetic is great, soundtrack is great, story is great, cinematography is really great.
Above all, it has great rewatch potential and is memorable, which is my top criteria for movie recs because I canāt recommend a movie I donāt remember.

This is a fantastic movie
All the discourse surrounding it is exhausting itās a fictional movie about war photographers and the tragedies of war and it is not a warning or āthis will actually happen if we donāt fix thingsā movie
Kirsten Dunst is obviously great but Cailee Spaeny is the standout for me she is just so fucking good (canāt wait for alien Romulus that is going to be so cool)
The soundtrack is insane and songs play over the most harrowing shit youāve ever seen that you would never think to put over those scenes but it works so so well
See it in imax if you can the gunfire is deafening and shocking and it is a great looking movie too (the incorporation of the photography throughout is incredible)
Anyone from DC or the surrounding area will be weirded out or at least I was seeing insane combat in the streets of dc and in the White House/lincoln memorial/Washington monument but it made it even more impactful for me

Iām sure this movie has been recommended by many on this app over the course of October but I need to add my name to the list of recommenders. I linked my review (it does have some spoilers towards the end) but I needed to get some thoughts out. Even after finishing the movie over an hour ago Iām still thinking about it and the visuals. A movie made in the language of film, in the lineage of films, for people who care and respect about cinema as a unique artistic and storytelling medium.
If you need a final push to see this movie, please let this be that final push.

I adore finding a random video from like 2005 and reading through the comments the way a historian would examine an old manuscript from the 1700s. Are these people still active YouTube users? Or are they forgotten accounts? What did @jjlwis mean by "awww im gonna miss rob too!!!" ? Who even is Rob?? Anthropology in the digital age... so many questions... it's fascinating.
The important thing for me is not to add new comments. I feel like I'm disturbing an old archeological dig site and my sticky modern commentary will make the video crumble away into oblivion. More importantly, I don't want the algorithm to suggest the video to a bunch of people who will spam the comments sectionā major yuck š¤¢

early 80s to early 2000s truck models are the perfect sizes imo. current trucks are transformer-sized behemoths that could easily crush normal vehicles into smithereens upon impact and i legit donāt know how those things are even street-legal. also, idk if itās their design, reliability or the nostalgia factor per-se, but thereās a certain sazĆ³n those older trucks have that newer ones donāt.

with social media being this pervasive entity that has weeded its way into our daily routines for the past 20ish years (plus a global pandemic that really solidified those habits), many young adults today have spent a large amount of their lives living online. it has become the new norm and iām not gonna pretend iām above any of this because itās so easy to fall into it (i am literally writing this rec on my phone whilst itās a perfectly sunny day that i should probably go out to enjoy).
with that being said, in the larger scheme of life, being in your 20s is still in a weird way the beginning stages of your life. itās a period to try new things, make mistakes, learn from them and develop an identity thatās independent from the environment and people who raised you. though you can learn to do some of those things online, they donāt hold a candle to actually experiencing those things for yourself in real life.
all in all, the best way to not sleep thru your 20s is to prioritize in-person experiences that allow you to get a better understanding of yourself and your values. whether that be getting your first tattoo, moving to a new city or country, exploring your personal style or taking up hobbies you couldnāt or wouldāve never done as a kid, this is an important formative time to venture out and get a sense of who you truly are.
