her paintings seem so simple at first glance but ultimately are well composed with a very good eye for color and smart ideas conceptually she passed in december only a few months after announcing her representation by david kordansky and her first museum retrospective at colby college. im sad she wasnt able to see the height of her success. RIP

legend, goat, icon. If thereā€™s someone Iā€™m never going to stop giving flowers to until the day I die no matter how annoying it gets, itā€™s Marisol. And maybe Larry David but thatā€™s another rec. To describe her art practice in a few sentences would be to butcher its true mission, as I think is true of most art practices, but to not try at all would be even worse. She created to understand herself, her place in the world. Her style was a hard-fought-for realization of her personality. A mix of pre Colombian folk art, classic sculpture, and the Pop Art scene that was happening around her, the works feels futuristic and ancient at the same time. Honest work, funny work, confounding work. And when she was at the height of her recognition in the 60s, all anyone wanted to talk about was her being hot and a friend of Warhol. Then everyone stopped talking or caring about her. Also when she was at her career peak, she went by 1 name like LeBron or Rihanna. Absolute legend. Iā€™ll never forget seeing her sculpture ā€œLoveā€ for the first time in an Art History lecture. RIP to the goat

I miss my grandma. She was such an amazing woman and artist. Very introspective. I love the way she looked at life. She would always notice the small unusual details with so much gratitude. I love her conceptual art projects of the 70ā€™s. She once made a map of store fronts around San Francisco, creating a sort of scavenger hunt gallery, proving that art is all around us. Years later, I took the map and photographed what the store fronts turned intoā€¦Ā

for overall artists, i really enjoy the body of work by photographer renĆ©e cox. i love her takes on representation and her unapologetic nature. i wasnā€™t much of a photography girl before her, but i get it now. i also really enjoy the paintings of oda iselin sĆønderland and the mood sheā€™s able to capture with them. and i canā€™t forget the works of aya takano! i love the world sheā€™s crafted and the figures that come out of it. she reminds me that iā€™m a woman but also still a girl if that makes sense. for favorite contemporary works of art in general, thatā€™s even harder as i have so many! for now, iā€™ll choose kiki smithā€™s 1996 piece ā€œconstellationā€ (pictured here). but i could go on forever.
