last year i felt from the bart (sf subway) stairs and sprained both my ankles. a woman next to me was sprinting because a train was coming and i went along. it was not even my train. i was carrying a bag with lunch, carrot soup in a glass container. it splashed all over the floor, big orange splatter, very dramatic. after a year my ankles are still swollen and i canā€™t wear the friendship anklet my best friend got us. my point being, rushing is evil and never really worth it.

firstly i will say (not that it never happens but), statistically violent crime in nyc is actually increasingly low right now compared to previous years and compared to other large US cities. i am short and in my 20s and generally i always feel really safe alone on the subway until around 12AM-ish, but after then i might uber. besides a few weird or uncomfortable experiences nothing bad has ever happened to me or (afaik) people i know on the subway, both now and when i was taking it growing up if youā€™re going out early in the week (Sun-Wed), be aware that less people will be out the later it gets. but on weekends people will be out really late, especially around bars and in the neighborhoods youā€™d be going to some notes/tips - you could always look at the specific bar locations and go to one thatā€˜s under a few minutesā€™ walk to a subway stop. i also would strongly not recommend getting trashed if youā€˜re new to the subway so you can have a clear head navigating ā€” and be sure you know the difference between ā€œexpressā€ and ā€œlocalā€. also citymapper > google/apple maps but really the #1 thing is just to mind your business - donā€™t stare, keep your bag on your lap, and just read/look at your phone/listen to music. i usually wear (wired) earbuds on a lower volume when walking and on the subway so i can hear things but itā€™s obvious i donā€™t want to chat ! and in the rare instance someone is making you nervous or just being really annoying, at the next stop you can just switch to a different car on the train

Nothing annoys me more about the American culture than the lack of enthusiasm. If I invite you to go somewhere and your answer is ā€œsureā€ or ā€œwhy notā€, Iā€™m taking it back. I do not wanna be surrounded by indifferent people. Itā€™s unworthy.

When I was a kid, I had a homework assignment that asked me what my biggest dream was, and I wrote, 'to spend a whole day on the internet.' That didnā€™t age well for obvious reasons, but here, that feeling was rekindled. In that spirit, hereā€™s my favorite picture of pre teen me, chasing for enlightenment onlineā€¦. she wouldā€™ve loved pi.fyi
