this was one of those books that made me ask the wind “how and when did this person crack open my skull and look inside my brain?” all the things that scared, flummoxed, and annoyed me in the last few years are (artfully!) described and dissected. as a bonus, this is also one of those books that was written by an exceptionally erudite person, so you’ll end up with a quality reading list and watch list.

Answering my own ask because i realised I hadn't recd this incredible book. I listened to the audiobook (linked), read by the author. A memoir mixed with outstandingly thorough film criticism. it’s an incredible piece of work, spanning the history of the “psychotic woman” in the horror film genre. Amazing to see someone‘s obsession become something so beautifully tangible.

Just read Writing by Marguerite Duras in one go which is often either a sign of my mental health going haywire or a book being so tantalizingly real and/or inspiring that time goes out the window and I am hooked into every word like a calf to a teat in search of protein I was especially drawn into these reflections about writing a book and what it means to a be a writer A contradiction that is both of the world and seperate from it that is a witness and being witnessed constantly in two phases Highly recommend for writers and readers that love reading writing about writing

For weeks after I finished this book for the first time I would think about it every five minutes. I’d be walking around the city and everything/everyone would be glaringly vibrant, beauty and ugliness coexisting and screaming. Everything pulsated with life in an almost uncomfortable way. She’s a freaky genius. This book honestly changed the way I see the world.

during the pandemic i decided that only watching films in your house was depressing and i would never be that person. i started going to the movie theatre at least once per week and i now believe it is an important element of living chic-ly. i am now swimming in SCENE points (only canadians will understand that), a member of multiple film societies, and blithely unaware of anything on netflix.
i want to know how you felt watching anatomy of a fall after a breakup or what it was like to take your niece to the paw patrol movie in your depressing hometown movie theatre or that you were inspired to watch cleopatra jones after reading rupaul’s new memoir. i don’t really want to know why you gave dune 2 4.5 stars nor am i interested in your quippy one-liner about the zone of interest (i hate all letterboxd reviews that are try-hard, quippy one liners, but I really hated those!)
