This incredibly special film will challenge and comfort you: it will place the spectre of death on your shoulder and shoo away any worries you had about it being there. It’s full of beautiful images, but the most lasting are the ones that transcend the screen. I’ve not had a cinema experience like it

I went into this film entirely blind having heard nothing about it and I loved it. I felt so moved by it in a way I haven’t by a film in a while. So subtle but somehow very tactile in its depiction of isolation and depression. Daisy Ridley is perfect in it.

Today's eclipse brought this movie to mind, easily my favorite Weerasethakul and maybe my favorite film depending on the day. Haunting and healing is kinda his whole thing but I find Syndromes to be the most so, truly a trance I never want to end. Would you believe me if I told you one of cinema's most unnerving moments is a slow zoom into a pipe?

The descriptions of smells in books is something that always sticks out to me. In Don Quixote, for example, it’s the chivalric scent of ambergris; in One Hundred Years of Solitude, the smell of Colonel Aureliano BuendĂa’s lavender-perfumed moustache lingers on the page. At the university library, I would often be blanketed by the warm, woody aroma of oud whenever a Muslim student walked past my desk. Smelling good makes you identifiable, it helps you feel confident, and it pleases everyone around you

Don’t like the local bands in your area? Do your fav bands always skip your city? I know the feeling: it sucks. But it’s also okay! Maybe your city, like mine, has a really vibrant jazz scene. Or maybe, like mine, it attracts renowned classical musicians. Turns out there’s a tiny cafe near my house that country musicians from the U.S. travel thousands of miles to. Who knew? Don’t worry if it might not seem like “your thing” — just go, you could be surprised. There’s no point resisting, you have to embrace your city and play to its strengths. This doesn’t just apply to music btw, go and explore it all! Theatre, museums, galleries, sports, it’s endless…

Kind of obvious but asking yourself what you believe in is really valuable. There’s no pressure to have a deep-rooted belief system or to practice a religion, but having some sort of personal conviction about the world can be comforting and affirming
