Gorgeous and otherworldly braided story of folks stranded on a fantastical alien planet (that's half Codex Seraphinianus and half Heavy Metal magazine). A little intense and violent after the first few episodes, but the narrative is sophisticated & character development well done.

If you like sci-fi (not necessarily action sci-fi) and appreciate visual storytelling with a chill pace and weird alien ecosystems, give Scavengers Reign a go. Season 1 was on Max (the one to watch for HBO). Max dropped it for some reason, but Netflix picked it up.

an animated sci-fi show following the survivors of interstellar cargo ship crash. the animation is beautiful and the stories are intriguing and surprising (despite some classic sci-fi tropes). it was initially released on max, and is getting a second chance on netflix. i seriously hope it gets more love and attention. while this first season is satisfying, it deserves more space (omg haha!) to grow and expand.

I know others have recd it, but I finished it today and HOLY SHIT. That is some good sci-fi!! it’s like if Ghibli did brutality? I realllyyyy love when stories portray an environment as a central character, and this planet and its creatures have so much personality. Annihilation meets Nausicaa of the valley of the wind. Just stunning.

Strange, otherworldly (literally & figuratively) animated science fiction that feels very 1970s. Weird & occasionally grotesque, but not scary. On HBO.

Magical '80s childhood of a Pakistani American girl in Queens; like A Tree Grows in Brooklyn but of this cultural moment. Probably one of my top favorites of the year & I read it in the first week of January.
