currently studying history in university and my workload is immense but i'm motivated by trying to understand why things are the way they are now and the different approaches you can take (sociology, anthropology, etc)

I may be biased as I am a history studentā€”however I cannot stress the importance of history enough. ā€œHistoryā€ as a discipline may seem quite vague, and it may well be, however through that it can be applied to any field of study. History (accompanied by philosophy) is the foundation of every living discipline and understanding it will help you succeed in your respective field. Studying history builds critical, analytical, and philosophical thinking skills, makes you far more culturally literate, and helps you understand yourself, other people, yourself in relation to other people, and your environment. Study history, it is exponentially important! You may apply this to any context of your choosingā€”for example, if you are interested in physics, you may be curious to understand the history of the field. Or, you may be curious about the history of ā€œHistoryā€, and you may be interested to learn that it did not even emerge as a discipline of its own until the 19th century, thanks to Leopold von Ranke!

Like so many people, I never cared for history. It was always just a bunch of dates, cause-and-effect relationships, and names I had to memorize last minute before an exam. Now that Iā€™m so many years separated from all that, Iā€™ve finally found that Iā€™m entering the pro-history phase of my life. I mean, itā€™s just so interesting. Thereā€™s such finite details available about everything, and sooo many different little niches with tons of resources equally as available as the obvious stuff. oh and itā€™s true, which is both terrifying and cool.
