idiom / metaphor dichotomy

teamwork makes the dream work (not animation company, though we are on an illustration course trip. food for thought as always). in a spitball frenzy of producing a list of idioms, one comes to a frightening conclusion, where does the idiom stop and the metaphor begin. when are your friends laughing with you and when does it become out of pain. if a tree falls in a forest, and nobody hears it, will we stop at the green welly pit stop ?
