this is a premature rec bc although i got the ebook for this a while ago, i have only read the essay by ngai herself (titled "the cuteness of the avant garde" and really good, its included in the collection). im looking forward to reading the whole thing!!!! there are sooo many essays spanning many points in time, from 1927 - 2020, all about the cultural perception & impact of cuteness and artists who use cuteness in their practices

This book is a MUST read. I’ve been reading a lot recently about the aesthetics of girlhood, girlishness, the colour pink & the symbolism behind it. Its informed a huge chunk of the identity behind my new album and also the exhibition I am co-curating at Somerset House (more news on that soon….!).  Fun fact: if you didn’t know already this book taught me that Hello Kitty is actually a little girl, not a cat.

formative introduction to aesthetics. influenced my obsession with brand loyalty, body negativity, and being mean. massie's developed sense of style was very profound to me as a tween. notable concepts: - all white room with bowl of green apples - sleigh bed for a dog - in and out lists - the kid who wears shorts all year round (very hot to me)
