One of the most overlooked movies in the past 5 years. Sold as a body-horror pic, but more of a gumshoe detective story involving surgery and microplastics in a sort-of dystopian future. Incredibly steamy and unusual. One of my favorite Kristen Stewart performances (next to Personal Shopper and Adventureland). The body horror element might scare some away, but not often a sci-fi story so stuck in its world has so much to say about ours. Thought provoking and conversation worthy, high rewatchability.

Have you ever dreamt of a better version of yourself? 🧪✨ Coralie Fargeat’s ‘The Substance’ was my most anticipated movie of the year. It’s neon, horror, cerebral, has 80’s vibes, and a synth driven soundtrack. Everything I could want in a movie. This movie eviscerated my brain in the best way possible. I left the theater wondering what in the world did I just experience, but knew I wanted more.  The themes of this movie hit home for me as someone who deals with the pressure of unrealistic beauty standards. Demi Moore gave her all to this movie and her performance blew me away. Margaret Qualley stole the scene every time she was on screen. Dennis Quaid plays a great sleaze ball. The actors understood the assignment. That being said, if you’re not a body horror fan, this will be a tough watch. I was definitely squirming in my seat 😅 It also ran a wee bit long for me but do I want to see this again in a packed theatre? Yes. The last movie that made me feel like this was Gaspar Noé’s Climax, and it does have a similar energy to it. Overall, this movie was pure madness but utter genius and I highly recommend you go into this movie with as little knowledge as possible.

the unflinching type of depravity you expect to see in 480p on effedupmovies.com, not in a chain theatre, yet made me want to be much kinder to myself watch if you like: cronenberg, troma, having physical reactions to art, being a gorgeous woman in a tiny glittery dress i also recommend fargeat’s other film revenge (2017) which is similarly gnarly.. one thing i love about her style is when her brain cooks up something uniquely gruesome she wants her audience to see every bit of it, not a single cut away in either movie

Saw this at Quad Cinema in 2021, and has become a favorite ever since. Anne is a 27-year old daycare worker who is socially disconnected, and unsure of her role in adulthood. Her life radically changes when she tries skydiving, though as an audience, we’re unsure of the kind of release she finds from it. Excellent Canadian indie about coming-of-age in your mid/late 20s. Deragh Campbell is great as Anne, who’s undiagnosed anxiety disorder keeps her a step behind from relating to her peers or finding a sense of happiness. It’s a brisk 75 minutes that’ll have you thinking far after the movie is over. Bought the beautiful poster from Posteritati in the East Village and it remains one of my favorites in my poster collection.
