It's hard to waste time online happily now, but you can still do it on are.na. I can both be surprised by what I see and carve out a sense of place on it. Kind of like adult, quieter Tumblr. I use it for general aggregation (clothing, images, posters, reading material) and for moodboarding creative projects.

Are.na is its own thing like any other place. (I disdain Tumblr-sourced images on there. It drives me up the wall.)
Use it most of all to distill information and build connections between ideas. It works best when you are purpose-driven with your initiative. What are you trying to do? That will help you understand how you want to use it.
I currently curate a handful of public-facing channels. That gets resorted into a small set of private channels or downloaded onto my hard drive.
~ Are.na grew from founding members interested in sharing their art. Then, teachers and students used it to conduct research. And now, some galleries/artists use it to run mini blogs. It's still all of those things and more.

one day i was on the work computer and i wanted to find more Fruits Magazines and came across dozens of pdfs on are.na!!! it's catered towards design and architecture students it's the loveliest tool as a casual internet user. it's self financed with premiums (no ads) plus it's minimalistic and easy to use - it organizes pictures, websites, and pdfs into these sections called channels. there is no algorithm it's purely based on hunter and gatherer vibes i started using it recently and have found countless channels of historical zines, 90s/2000s perfume ads, bare bone websites built with just html, old blogs, and so much more. i think perfectly imperfect and are.na are proof that the internet is well and alive!

soso good it is litch pinterest but for weirdos. it has no algorithm at all. it has everything from articles to insta posts its just a big archive of everything on the internet ever. i love it because i think that algorithms in other social media platforms are all about pandering to what you like, meaning you get pushed further into your own interests rather than being made aware of new ones, which are.na def avoids. xoxoxoxoxoxo
