is it okay that I’ve surrounded myself with so much STUFF? is accumulation always greed? where is the line between excess and simply nesting/ living in a home? is it just a luxury to have the space to store things for repurposing and reusing (ie jars, scraps for art, hobbies of the past — and hopefully the future— once adulthood/capitalism settles down)? or is this actually good for something?

I have been thinking about this all morning! I have a small space and lot of stuff so I relate. I’m a bit of a pack rat also which I think is an inherited trait from people who were raised by people who grew up in the depression. But like also the through line for our generation is Great Recession and pandemic. Minimalist spaces are so popular and I think I have moments where I’d like less stuff. Like it LOOKS NICE to have a space that could be in a magazine, but they never feel realistic like anyone I know would live there. My partner and I were talking recently about how maybe minimalism is just rich people shit because if you can afford to get whatever whenever you don’t fret over throwing stuff out. Is it a trick to keep you getting rid of and replacing items? I guess what I’m trying to say is I come down on the side of it being good to hang onto stuff and keeping things to reuse.

erraticcompendium yes!!! Minimalism could never be me bc I hate to repurchase!! i Wonder how much more (or less?) I would accumulate if I had a house that I could dependably live in for years and years and year — as opposed to the uncertainty of renting.

mothercannoli I feel like its common to stay a lot leaner when you rent and move more often. There is a nice feeling to passing things along to move or reorganize but I admit I don’t do this as often as I should. I guess as always, the answer is somewhere in the grey area.

i used to be very minimalistic in my teen years, everything had to have it's own place and be perfectly organized or i'd start twitching (something undiagnosed, probably. it's fine.) somewhere along the way i started to get very sentimental with my things, i think it came with the thrifting addiction. realizing how much value all those things have and how many lives they lived before i found them is just really interesting to think about. the things you keep says a lot about you, and what better form of expression than filling my space with things that i love and feel connected with? colors and textures that bring me peace? the world is a disaster so keeping small things to spark joy is crucial!!!

im a maximalist/consumerist kinda guy, but having all your awesome shit together to display on a shelf is so cool to me it can be collectors items or personal mementos, for me it’s both! i just like displaying my favorite items from my life. that’s more for the vibes, i dont know about space or anything :(

Buying in bulk or even what is considered a normal size is presumptuous. What if you move? What if you travel? What if you get that thing as a gift or see a different brand you want to try, a sale online, a new scent/flavor? Then, what, you have a big pile of the same crap taking up precious space in your home?

both iCal— and I’m a big fan of multiple shared calendars. I have one with my sister, my mom, my partner, my bestie and one for myself. really helpful organizing plans with people and keeping track of far out dates like vacations and concert tickets. paper planner- for weekly and daily todo lists. finding where i can fit in x3 things to do daily based on what time allows for that day. and of course adding stickers and doodles with pretty markers. I use one from Shorthand.
