this is my third semester taking weekly guitar lessons, but admittedly I have not practiced much in the past. that changes NOW. my fingers hurt and I keep making mistakes but it will be worth it <3 I think 2025 is the year to do challenging things. And, anyway, this guitar isn't going to play itself...

play through the pain

Sorry :( it hurts for a couple months BUT! you should also spend time playing power chords to get used to the form/fretboard while only using the lowest 2-3 notes in a bar chord. You can also learn triads along the top 3 strings for some really useful chord shapes that will also connect back to your bar chord playing later.
