Mad Men was dominating television and PanAm, another period drama also set in the 60s, was poised to ride their coattails into the sky. It didn’t work out as planned and the result is one of the biggest television train wrecks I’ve ever witnessed. Some scenes are so ridiculous that I had to rewind to confirm that I wasn’t dreaming. It’s not quirky, it’s not camp, but secret third thing that I don’t think I’ll ever figure out. Christina Ricci gives a performance that can only be described as…frantic. Aside from terrible ratings, Margot Robbie’s team is probably responsible for the show’s cancellation. She was set to star in Wolf of Wall Street during what would’ve been PanAm’s second season. The two simply could not exist at the same time. Someone said “choose your fate” and Margot definitely chose the right path. Thank you, Apple TV, for bringing this gem to the streaming universe. I hope some indie theater kids find this show and create a parody that truly highlights how insane PanAm truly was.
