I love anything Fitzcarraldo. A sweet, short book about Brian, an old-ish man, a bit of a loner, who experiences community for the first time at the BFI.

This sweet, sweet book. this is a book about a gentle outsider, a Londoner who has a very small world, which centers around a small axis. his flat, his office job and the cafe he eats his lunch at every day. But he quietly yearns for more. one day, he stumbles across the British Film Institute (BFI) by chance. (the best cinema in the world?!?) and he sees the world anew. He feels like he belongs. itā€™s a sweet portrait of one sweet man, Brian. and itā€™s a beautiful survey of cinema. Hereā€™s an example page for you āœØ

Whenever someone is like ā€œI havenā€™t read a book in 5 years, what should I read?ā€ I suggest this cult classicā€”because it is experientially easy but conceptually rich, and thus will effortlessly adhere to your attention and satisfy your urges. It is a Hollywood novel about an asshole (timeless genre!) who surfs the wave of power and excess until it all goes Terribly Awry. The book was published in 1988 so it is dated in fun ways but also timeless in the ways that matter. (Robert Altman made a movie of it but the book is betterā€”which is saying a lot, because the movie rules!)

I'm so glad there's more of us, I had the exact same experience with this book!

In fact theyā€™re working against you, especially women of colour. 84% of Tinder users are men, Bumbleā€™s earnings have gone down hugely since its IPO (thereby further increasing their need to make a profit off subscriptions), Hinge is hiding hot people behind a paywall. People are sick of getting lovebombed and ghosted. But we donā€™t need themā€”thereā€™s more to life than appsā€”and people are beginning to seek connections in person again.
