i read this novel last year. it had a big impact on me and quickly became one of my favorites. it’s about a man who decides to leave his privileged life/family in favor of living an ascetic life as a fisherman on a river in Tennessee. its description of alcoholism and being black-out drunk has stuck with me, and there’s a scene describing a bar fight that‘s so theatrical. generally though i appreciate how this protagonist‘s isolated lifestyle is told through the details of his life - i just thought the book was so beautifully written, funny, sad… i read his novel Outer Dark after this one and it was OK but Suttree rules.
