these are basically inside jokes taken too far, or silly excuses to throw theme parties. for example: tomorrow I’m seeing an old friend for the first time in forever so we can celebrate Rex Manning Day and listen to music on vinyl and just generally catch up. every october my friends and I celebrate Tommy Day, which is just a day where we get drunk and hype up our friend Tommy. Tommy Day always falls months after Tommy’s actual birthday.

capyboppy years ago during a very normal bar hang one of my friends insisted on putting all of our birthdays on his google calendar. due to extenuating circumstances (several shots of fernet) he input Tommy’s birthday on some random day, then forgot about it. later, he got the ”birthday” reminder and so he sent Tommy a bunch of books as a gift. when they arrived Tommy had to break the news that we had missed his birthday by several months. regardless, we kept the calendar notification and now every October we send Tommy books and deranged emails impersonating Dave Eggers (which is yet another inside joke).

My partner and I celebrate a holiday we made up called Merp Day based on a dumb joke we made two years ago. One of us made a “merp” sound and it was around the time when saying “Its’s giving…” had really taken off. We thought it was funny to kind of sing to one another “It’s giving… merp“ and thus a new holiday was born. That’s it. That’s the whole story, but else other reason does there need to be? That’s just something any of us can do at any time. Create traditions to revel in the strangeness of our lives in this absurd and inexplicable universe! When the world practically seems designed to wear us down, finding cause to be joyous is its own form of rebellion. So, happy third-annual Merp Day to all who celebrate!

I’m planning a last-minute holiday party, and it’s given me a new lease on life! The idea first emerged six days ago. It stewed in my brain and tomorrow I’m making it happen. There will be sparkly outfits, an exchange of favourite books, gingerbread decorating, mulled wine, and charcuterie. I’m going to be real—this party is for me. Yeah, I want my friends to have a good time, mingle, etc. But I need this to preserve my own sanity. Planning gives me the chance to think creatively, do silly little tasks, and fight seasonal depression. When I was younger I didn’t care for the holidays, but the older I get, the more I realise that I NEED to celebrate special occasions to the fullest. What else helps mark the days?

Why only celebrate Christmas with your extended friend group during the one week everyone is busy? Set your group’s handmade gift secret santa (that’s a rec within a rec) for an Italian restaurant in late January. Get wine drunk and give each other things you’ve made and bask in love.
