This morning I went for a walk to clear my head and now I know how a woodpecker speaks and the sound a small magnolia makes when it rustles in the wind. My problems feel a little less significant now.

My neighborhood family of deer still visit regularly. The young buck is growing little antler nubbins 🥹❤️ every day since my overgrown lawn has been tamed my resident backyard squirrel runs around, lightly digging and foraging for acorns. it's been a treat to watch him through my office window as he explores!! The chipmunks chatter up in the trees and throw acorns down at my dog because they hate his ass. I love looking up and seeing if I can pinpoint their location in the branches by their sounds it makes me feel so in tune with nature. My father gave me binoculars as a gift before I really had occasion to use them and I need to find them and bust them out…

This probably applies to every day but it was particularly nice to start the new year by journaling at the bagel shop and then walking in the park. As I was walking a heard an unusual call: a downy woodpecker. Then, I noticed a hawk in a squirrel’s nest. And another hawk, and a robin, and a sapsucker. There were many sparrows and they were circling like crazy (on account of the hawk). It was so dramatic that it sparked a conversation with a nice older man who I probably wouldn’t have spoken to unless I went out with the intention to be alone.

The seriousness with which they take their job (looking out the window) is moving. It's a big world for a little cat.

I'm on vol. III of "In Search of Lost Time." Perfect way to start the year in reading.
