Letting your mind wander and stretch and scrape against the desire for instant gratification and stimulation is a necessary and beautiful meditation to me :-)
My father always wisely told me only boring people are bored and now I will happily stare at a wall and ponder until the cows come home

One time I was planning a solo cabin trip and I was worried about how I’d fill the time. What if I don’t make the most of it? Won’t I be bored? Someone told me — the boredom is part of it. They were right! Being bored is an important part of the human experience. It is necessary suffering. The absence of distractions is more important than anything. It allows the mind to rest and then wander. The absence forces you to confront things you are avoiding. If you want to find a “use” for it, it can prompt creativity. Put the phone down and let yourself be bored. We need it. It’s a process.

It’s actually a privilege to be bored. I think of it as an opportunity to get lost in my thoughts and dreams. Normalize just sitting still. I love going out and doing wild things to chase that high that socialization can give you, but at some point it’s a bore. Sit still.
