I have watched a couple music documentaries recently, ones on Arthur Russell and Judee Sill, and have enjoyed them. They are somewhat formulaic biopics so they arenā€™t super hard to process but offer a lot of information on the artistry of a person I find interesting and their music plays in the background and it gets in my head! They are also usually pretty short so you can throw them on if you have a spare hour and a half.

Maybe some unorthodox choices but Iā€™ve always been into non-narrative, experimental documentaries. Some of the best I know are ā€œAs I Was Moving Ahead, Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beautyā€, ā€œKoyaanisqatsiā€, ā€œSans Soleilā€. These were some of the purest, most powerful cinematic experiences Iā€™ve had in my life, so Iā€™d suggest you peep them. On a (slightly) more conventional note, literally any documentary made by Herzog

scala (2023) is a brilliant documentary about the scala cinema in london, and how it influenced a whole generation of creatives. absolutely brilliant film and made me reconsider how i look at movies generally. while we watched (2022) is the story of a ravish kumar, an indian news reporter trying to fight against the misinformation put out by the indian media and the pressure put on him by the government. squaring the circle (2022) is a really fun documentary if youā€™re into your classic rock. all about the group that designed half of the famous album covers from that period, and the story behind the group and the art. and lastly iā€™ll say the sparks brothers (2021). just a brilliant display of how filmmaking can be used in a documentary. again, loads of fun, really beautiful shots, amazing lineup of interviewees. i hadnā€™t even heard of sparks before watching this but i was a big fan by the end.

Its a web app that people submit 1 song per week and then everyone gets to vote on the all the different songs but their own. After all the rounds have been completed, the person with the most votes wins! Its a fun way to share music with people and get competitive. Been using this app with other online communities and friends for a few months and have really been enjoying it. NOTE: I created a PI.FYI League where the first submission is this friday. I limited it to 25 people for now not sure if I should open that up to more but it would be pretty overwhelming to have more than 25 songs to listen and vote on.
