like donā€™t get me wrong i was both best dressed AND too cool for school. and too cool for school is THEE inheritance of hot weird goth girlsā€¦but likeā€¦people were coming up to me in the hallway outraged that best dressed was sniped from me FOR WEEKS, you donā€™t understand, i was my high schoolā€™s personal lady gaga, the dean of students was my #1 opp and had a personal vendetta against me. i was nearly suspended purely for dress code violations. i was once sent home for wardrobe and came back in a sequined bodysuit and a giant floor length cloak in protest and i kept the hood up for the rest of the day. i wore a lehenga choli and knockoff giuseppe zanotti heelless heels to prom. even after high school i am to my knowledge the only person who has been asked to leave an NYU dining hall due to dress code violations. i was a known fashion icon. it was absolute robbery allie if you see this sorry for calling you a mid bitch but letā€™s be real it was too obvious, you were yearbook editor and absolutely no one was checking for your fits, they were cute but very j crew catalog. you shouldā€™ve just given yourself best smile and no one would have noticed. you flew too close to the sun with your ambition for sartorial recognition and i can forgive but it will never be forgotten

And the vice principal paraded me through the campus while loudly berating me and then measured the hemline of my dress as compared to my knee by placing a dollar bill against my thigh. I called my mom crying and she got an article published in the local paper about it with a picture of the outfit I was wearing and ā€˜slut shamingā€™ in the title, exposing their common practice of humiliating girls. I said in the article that a dollar bill is not a measuring implement and that having one placed on my body against my will made me feel like I was being treated like a stripper. The PR nightmare made them stop. A male teacher with questionable intentions who I later smoked weed with at a party praised me in front of our film class for ā€˜fighting the man.ā€™ Everyone clapped. We attended a lot of mediation meetings and they were so afraid that we were going to sue that i was able to leverage it to graduate despite being on the precipice of being held back due to failing my classes from not doing work šŸ˜Ž I still canā€™t do math to this day

in retrospect this isnā€™t that big of a deal but i went to a very small boarding school of about 500 girls in a very small, conservative town where literally nothing happens and everyone knows everything about EVERYONE, so this was a big thing for US, but might not be for many. so there was this new girl that joined the school in grade 9, and she joined my homeroom class and was pretty nice. she was a little off beat, but for the most part everything seemed pretty okay and normal. we ironically started calling each other ā€œbest friendā€ until we eventually became friends. she was a big spender. sheā€™s buying at the tuckshop at break, after school, before school like every day. and mind you, we are boarders, most of us get a small allowance every month to go to town, to order food, buy essentials etc. i know the allowance of most people was not enough to buy from the tuckshop everyday. and i just thought damn, this girl must be rich rich. people quickly picked up on this though, and started asking her for money at the tuckshop. myself included. from grades 9-11 i used to be a tuckshop hustler (a damn good one at that!), like ask everyone for R2 until i had enough to buy a meal. but this girl would either just buy you the meal or just give out R10, R20, R50. and this id a lot of money! when business was slow iā€™d settle for a packet of chips and juice and that would come to about R8, the cheapest meal was a chip roll and that was about R13 and the most expensive was a wrap which was around R25 (if i remember correctly.) so sheā€™d just give out this money to MULTIPLE people throughout the day. i genuinely thought she was a BALLER! she had told me that she was switching schools, i donā€™t remember why, but she ended up leaving later that year. it was only AFTER she left that i heard that she used to steal peopleā€™s money. so in her hostel they used to have sleepovers on the weekends and every week it was a different room. she would (allegedly) go to these sleepovers and steal peopleā€™s money. i also found out that my class had chipped in money to buy me a gift, (birthdays were very big at our school and i had the first birthday in my class). turns out she stole it too! this is very underwhelming, but like just imagine this playing out like in an episode of derry girls yk

sophomore year was fun and exciting just because i got to go to prom as a sophomore and got a beautiful deep fuschia silk dress from the mad men collection at banana republic, it was definitely my favorite dress and honestly still need an occasion to wear it today. junior year prom was nice but not very memorable and i got a cute light pink (unfortunately the color of my flesh) dress at the mall with my mom. My friend did step on a used condom on the dance floor which was actually pretty eventful and horrific. and it was on 4/20 senior year was fun and i got an ornate burgundy and gold floor length dress with a beaded bodice and a fancy little scarf. I got my hair done and wore false eyelashes for the first/only time in my life. it was in a place called the ā€œslaughter rec centerā€ which felt foreboding. i had just been learning about muscle memory in AP psych and the example was about how we donā€™t think about which pedal is gas and which pedal is brake, we just use them without thinking consciously. well i thought about it and FUCKED up big time and did a rapid reverse into the car behind me in the hotel parking lot. turns out it was the university quarterback parentsā€™ brand new car. I was sober before and after all these proms and they were fun but in no way my most memorable high school experience, or even my most memorable dances in high school. the most memorable high school dance for unfortunate reasons was my homecoming freshman. i wore scarlet begonias in my hair because i wanted to impress my date who was a big sublime fan. said date (who did not go to our school) rented a tux (no, people donā€™t wear tuxes to homecoming) with coattails and a top hat (no there was no theme that made this make sense) and red converse. Then he proceeded to sing, do cringe improv shit, ignore me, and hit on my friends the whole time. I had a huge crush on him that evaporated in an instant and later went on to date his best friend. My school also had jazz band dances every quarter and those were by far the most fun and entertaining dances and had the best music by far! Our jazz band was really talented and I will forever have fond memories of ā€œitā€™s raining men.ā€
