ever since I lost all the photos I took on my iphone 5S back in 2018 I have SWORN to always back up my camera roll to each new phone I get my hands on!! I am SUCH a hoarder for screenshots and atp thereโs just way too many to reasonably filter through so Ive just accepted that they all can stay. screenshots of conversations with people who I donโt even speak to anymore. Screenshots of assorted instagram memes that i wanted to send to certain people years ago. They all served a purpose once upon a time and now they get to retire into the depths of familiarity amidst the other masses of images I have no reason to keep. But I keep them anyway. Maybe in 50 years time when my body and soul is uploaded into the cloud I will be able to walk back down through my camera roll and relive the memories I decided not to delete. That would be nice

im trying to temper my social media addiction this month. i get the impulse to scroll at least 100 times per day, however lately i have been scrolling through my own camera roll instead of apps. This is helpful since i have way too many screenshots that are meant to be reminders of a movie to watch, something to buy, or a protest to attend. scrolling through on my own camera roll without ads and in chronological order i end up deleting a lot of screenshots and making a note in my planner or notes about about what is important. Since I have started doing this I have begun to take more actual photos of the physical world around me because when I look back on these photos they make me smile and bring .... joy(!?!?!)

okay what i do is every new year, I put all the photos from the previous year onto a hard drive (two, actually) and remove them from my icloud. I do this because a) apple cloud storage makes me feel like a digital serf and b) i think that having photos of the past 5-10 years of your life so readily accessible is kind of detrimental, it lets you look back yes but also robs you of the ability to forget! How can you evolve as a person if you're constantly able to dwell on the past with such vivid clarity. I found the camera roll did more harm then good, i'd recommend trying it out
