and i don't just mean from a learning screenwriting standpoint! i remember there was a summer where i was in a HEAVY book slump. i felt like i couldn't focus and fully get into a fiction novel, so i decided to go back and reread my copy of the before sunrise/sunset screenplays. lo and behold, i smashed through it in a day or so. there's something so fascinating about seeing which scenes stay exactly the same and which scenes change, either from director input or improv. i love the challengers one for how different certain scenes are for the characters. like the conversationin the car with patrick towards the end. it's such a great way to see how different writers put scenes together and bring characters to life. also there are tons you can access for free online!

I used to be hardcore book before movie but two recent experiences changed my mind. 1. I finally read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep and it is radically different from Blade Runner. Setting, tone, themesโ€”Blade Runner ditched them all and just kept the replicants and the protagonist's name. And its still a fantastic adaptation. One piece of art begat another. 2. I decided to read Poor Things after watching the movie because the characters were so charming. The two works' presentations are different but equally endearing. Reading the book now makes me appreciate the omissions and condensation made for film, and the director's visual choices and additions. It's like I watched a creatively interpreted abridge version and now I'm reading deeper in a textbook. I think being so staunchly book-first made me approach movie adaptations with a lot of judgement. Now it's like I'm tasting a sample of a story and can choose to dive into the full course if it's compelling enough.

It is very fulfilling, and it expands your understanding of both texts so well!

going to see challengers on my own today! and i'm very excited. i'm someone who actually doesn't mind going to the cinema alone. i've done it so many times over the years, and totally do not get people who say it's sad. if i lived somewhere where i could go to late night screenings on my own, i would do it all the time. sometimes i end up making a friend, sometimes i just get to sit and get sucked in and then i get to leave and choose my favorite place to eat. it's a nice way to spend a day on your own, and i think more people (especially people in their 20s) should take themselves on little dates.

if i had a comfort sitcom, this would be it :,) sadly it only has two short seasons, so i've seen every episode at least 10 times. (if you're going to watch it, make sure to look up the right episode order because it aired out of order.) when i'm at a loss for what i want to watch, i put it on. somehow despite having seen it a bajillion times, the gags still land. there's also something so inherently 2000s about it with its slightly outdated jokes and energy that i find charming. it's the same way i feel about 2 broke girls. it's just fun hjinks with people who are kind of messed up!!!

to me figs smell like summer. i love fig scents, especially if they smell a bit more green than fruity. my favorite perfume smells a bit like the green-ness(?) but also fresh, clean dirt after the rain. if not fig, i am very much a sandalwood person or blackcurrant one. i like smelling nice but not necessarily floral. :)
