this is presumptuous of me, cause youre maybe already good at finger picking! but for me, once I’d got the hang of strumming a fee chords (mostly by learning The Kooks song lmao) I felt my guitar playing really stepped up a notch by looking up tabs of finger picked songs. I basically learnt all of Laura Marling's Alas I Cannot Swim, and it was pretty easy to follow the tabs and i started to feel more like a “real” guitar player. So I’d recommend that! Good finger picked songs to learn are Failure by Laura Marling, or Ghosts off the same album. Or Underneath The Stars by Kate Rusby. begin my playing them realllyyyy slow and your fingers will warm up to it quickly!

and ask any guitar friends to teach you basic chords. I learnt guitar by having my dad teach me some basic chords, then I learnt the entire The Kooks first record through tabs, and then Laura Marling’s Alas I Cannot Swim. And from that I basically learnt all the chords you need, and to finger pick and strum in different patterns. If something was a little more complicated id look up YouTube videos of people playing stuff to see what their hands were doing. I learnt how to play covers on piano purely from YouTube tutorials. And I’m literally a musician! its maybe not like the way to learn “properly” but it is the way that worked for me! I’ve linked Ultimate Guitar tabs website here which is where I still get my tabs for covers from 🤘🏼

idk why i have always been dogshit at getting strum patterns down but i looove to finger pick. getting a good roll down pat and then switching up the strings, playing around with the bass line, and just riffing around while changing up the chords is so much more fun than strumming to me

yay to new hobbies! best thing is to try not to get ahead of yourself. start with basic songs with easy 4 chord progressions. get the hang of strumming, switching hand positions, etc. then you can start to level up to bar chords, tabs, finger-picking, and more! ultimate-guitar.com and youtube tutorials are especially useful in these stages. but be patient with yourself, and enjoy the time you spend with your mind entirely focused on the thing in your hands and not roaming elsewhere. what a treat:)
