I know I’m sooo late to this (Im not a coffee drinker!)- I recently started being a coffee shop regular. It’s enlightening to have a place to chat, run into friends, read, and try new drinks. Sometimes these things feel limited to only alcohol-centric spaces and it’s great to have a spot to unwind after work each day. Chai lattes forever and always ❤️

I typed this as I was working in a coffee shop. Idk, there’s something really under appreciated about working in a coffee shop. You can people-watch and it’s meditative af. Two of my favorite things in one. Plus a little drink and a snack whenever you want.

I'm sitting in the nearest coffee shop to where I live, which happens to be a Starbucks. When I walked in, the manager said "Good morning, Matt."
I've only been coming here a few months, one or two times a week, but it now it feels a bit like home.
— you may be looking for a different type of third place rec though, a place where you can definitely build community, and there's no guarantee of that at a coffee shop.
My impulse for me is to assume I'm not alone in this need/desire and to start something. Any place can become that third place, now the challenge is just getting people to join you there.
While still in college, I plastered "reading aloud night" posters around the campus and invited people to bring something to read aloud to others: either their own work or a favorite snippet from another author. A half dozen people came and we hung out until late in a common area—and then kept doing it. Some beautiful friendships started in that little group.

It is my belief that so many people would be less lonely if they invited their friends to do their mundane errands and chores together. Dont have time to see your friends, cant afford to go out to socialize? Invite your friends to things you already will be doing and it ease some of the pain of the responsibilities. Or call someone to come over if you made a little too much for dinner. here is what I shared tonight: chicken thighs, fairy tale eggplant, fennel salad, and a nice groleau red wine

when I was in high school, my friend and I grew up catholic but we were always the ones wrecking havoc and causing mayhem. One day we got the bright idea to convince all these sheltered catholic kids that my real name was Breast and my name (Bailey) was a nickname for it. I told them that I had talked to the school about changing my name on any official reports to Bailey instead of Breast- due to excessive bullying. None of them were comfortable calling me my “correct name” and I would go into long speeches about how vulnerable it was for me to come forth with my real name and it was disrespectful for them to not acknowledge me as such, etc. Anyways, this lasted a few months before we finally confessed our scheme and everyone’s minds were blown. The end
