every australian film is a horror film because they have to live in australia but recently i am so enamoured with violent australian movies – wake in fright, satranic panic, the cars that ate paris... so gleefully nasty and drenched in so much sweat that it's crusting on the skin.
Australian film about the rotted, barbaric soul of colonial Australia. Very grim, very cursed, very gothic, weirdly funny in places. Hugely influential but slept on.
I haven't watched all of these so I can't testify how good they actually are but if you just want some ideas/a place to start here are a few:
- the wailing by na hong-jin (south korean)
- incantation by kevin ko (taiwanese)
- rec by paco plaza + juame balaguero (spanish)
- gonjiam: haunted asylum by jung bum-shik (south korean)
- pulse by kiyoshi kurosawa (japanese)
- suspiria by dario argento (italian)
- the babadook by jennifer kent (australian)
you ask and i shall deliver: highly rated, lowkey bangers. each of these will stick with you.
guaranteed to finish and think ”…holy shit, that was a great movie”

good for when you're really really dismayed and you need everyone to know that you are sooo dismayed but you're just going to be dramatic about it ONCE and then move on. you know?
