in the waning days of summer, i celebrate my favorite artificial water feature. clean, active, relaxing, yet surprisingly vigorous -- we need a network of high speed lazy rivers connecting communities across the united states and the world. it could be the salve for a planet on fire. cold, mass-market, domestic lager in hand, lazy river lapping at my feet -- it is the stuff of dreams. three cheers, lazy rivers.

at the rec center, at the y, at free outdoor pools like the mccarren park pool… it’s so fulfilling to move your body in a way that doesn’t feel punishing because the water is truly carrying you and you are water!!! any time I find myself working too hard / tiring myself out, I let myself float 10% more and it’s also a therapy session in that way

Don’t get me wrong, I love going to the beach in the summer but something about swimming holes hits different. There’s a sense of real nostalgia and joy that captures the true essence of summer. I grew up in Minnesota also known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, so maybe this is a way to connect with my roots. There are lots of swimming holes to choose from even as close as New Jersey. One of my favorites is more-so a lake but it’s surrounded by mountains and has a hot dog stand. It’s called Bellayre Beach and it will make you feel like a kid again.
