i frequently have the experience of hearing someone else's phone go off with a notification and then having them complain that they're being constantly bothered, only to learn that the notification was from DiscountCarpetsNow.com or some other inane shit like that. they then proceed to pull up their phone and there's, like, several dozen notifications from other apps that they clearly hate but inexplicably have, and it's clear that they've just stopped paying attention to their notifications all together if an app is not *absolutely essential* to your daily life, there is simply no reason why some motherfucker in silicon valley should be able to remotely bother you on command. when an app notifies you and you don't like it, mute it right then and there. unsubscribe from the email list. the dms can wait. your mind is as much a temple as your body is and there is absolutely no reason to let losers (and especially BRANDS) in.

This is just a big cosign for all the recs on this ask. Make Things Less Convenient that you don't want to invest in. At the same time, for the things you do want to invest in, Make Them More Convenient. I relentlessly cull what apps can send me notifications and automatically decline notifications when I install a new app. I delete sm apps from my phone and only use web view. I carry a physical book and writing supplies everywhere I go so I can just as easily reach for them as I could for my phone.

i only get notified for a) all calls and b) texts from my family i set it 2 years ago when i had such a bad crush that going on my phone made me anxious. forgot to turn it off and it ended up being the best thing for my brain. i feel less on the hook. one day i think i want a flip phone that being said it's important to turn it off occasionally like if your friend is going thru it or if there r any scenarios where u need to be more On the phone. u gotta know the line between being at peace and being unreachable

spent the last two weeks working on an interactive guide, recommendations database, and digital library (link depot) to help get people off of social media. the first draft is done now, and it's at the link to this post. it's still very much a work in progress (the library is especially thin atm) - which is why i wanted to share it here before unleashing it upon my IRL friends and the general public. i welcome any and all feedback, bug reports, and suggestions for things to add. i will be pushing updates to it out like a madman in the coming weeks, so be sure to check back every so often to see new additions to the database and library. additionally, i am still on the hunt for newsletters from local venues / community organizations / magazines / newspapers, etc. the only cities i have remotely covered so far are nyc, orlando, denver, brisbane, and little bits of worcester and chicago. if you know anything in your area that fits the bill, send it my way!

it’s so bad that discourse about it being bad is kind of played out now but it bears repeating how fucking bad it is
