for anyone who loves field recordings, general human sounds and being present (there isn't that many recordings yet so you have a pretty high chance of being the first one in your city/country) (i was) (it made me unreasonably proud lol)
college ex-boyfriend had to do field recordings for an audio class and i picked up the habit. hear a cool or interesting sound while out and about? record it, label it w location/time, and listen to it at a later date!
Iāve recently read a book about the concept of āsoundwalkingā and listening to the beauty of your surroundings exploring your city and neighborhood. I used to become pretty over stimulated by the sounds of the world and would used my headphones religiously to block any sounds of the outside world from getting in. But I started to wonder if the things I use to protect myself from the outside world also isolating me from experiencing it to its fullest potential. Maybe the sounds of construction and people talking and birds and busses arenāt just āsound pollutionā but a reverberation of society and life. An organic inprov performance just for me where I am right now in the world. it made me think that anything has the potential to be a work of art depending on your perspective. Iāve started walking with a tape recorder everywhere I go and I record the sounds around me as an auditory diary of sorts. itās fun to listen back and be reminded of the sounds of the bowling alley or the cafe or the sound check at the punk show. Since this perspective shift Iāve become allot less over stimulated by the world and become more creative with my greatest resource: the world around me.
seeing a movie on a huge screen (as most directors intended it to be seen) and just indulging in approximately 2 hours of pure uninterrupted escapism without anyone to worry about (plus supporting your local cinema at the same time). works best with "slow" films where the scenes linger. total bliss.
i don't know who needs to hear this (me. i need to hear this. i wrote this rec for me.) but late-stage capitalism influencers reaaaally want you to believe you need to have this whole grand 15-step skincare routine with all the little gadgets and gizmos or you are doing something fundamentally wrong. hear me out here - you are fine. the only thing they are contributing to is the ever-growing need to consume and the systematic destruction of your skin barrier. as long as you wash your face regularly and put on some sunscreen every morning, the rest is mostly just for the vibes.
