Getting laid off SUCKS and Iā€™m so sorry that happened to you. I would say find a side gig that works for you as soon as you can. Iā€™ve loved Instacart (if you have a car) cause itā€™s pretty good money and totally on your own schedule. Iā€™ve heard good things about task rabbit. Also random Craigslist event gigs or Poached gigs can be good, esp if you have food service experience. And if youā€™re open to it and feel comfortable, post to your IG (or any social) story saying youā€™re looking for work. I had followers come up through the woodwork that had some helpful random work to offer. The best gig I think is babysitting, if itā€™s something youā€™re interested in and if you can get an in through any moms you know. You can get paid more than a lot of part time gigs and get paid through Venmo or cash so you wonā€™t have to worry about any taxes, which feels so good. Also youā€™ve probably already looked into it, but I would just triple check you still canā€™t get unemployment (even if itā€™s only $100 a week or something). I thought I wouldnā€™t get any bc of the way I got laid off but after scouring Reddit realized I could still get some money.

Iā€™ve done this every time Iā€™ve found myself between full time jobs and it really makes the whole time better. You have a little money coming in and you can collect material for your future memoir. Some odd jobs from my past: Axe throwing coach Closet designer Lunch catering delivery Balloon bouquet maker Background extra i found them on big job boards like indeed and also Craigslist (Searching ā€œpart timeā€ gets you less garbage results). If you hate it after you start you can just quit! Also if you like pets, signing up for dog walking or petsitting will keep you active and you get to hang out with pets.

This goes against the grain of my anxiety riddled brain, but if you find yourself in a bout of unemployment I encourage you to lean in. From what I read, this very platform would not exist were it not for unemployment. Granted I know this perspective sounds like and is a privileged take, but just know I have no idea where next monthā€™s rent is coming from. I find that the psychic terror of not making money creeps in when Iā€™m most idle, so I try to do one or more of these things a day to keep that feeling at bay: - Walk my dog - Go to a museum - Research for creative projects - Make said creative projects - Call a friend - Go to the gym - Read a book or long form journalism - Cook - Clean my house Eventually I know that the capitalist grind will rear its ugly head, as it always does, but for a brief moment in time itā€™s nice to just shut the door on its face.

I got laid off 2 years ago and had to rebuild my resume as a designer. Design jobs average from 100-500 applicants. Insane saturation, so I knew I needed to find a side hustle to help me be patient while looking for the right job. I found that working the early shift at a coffee shop was a great help for me. It wasnā€™t a side hustle that took too much energy away for me, and I was able to finish my work day around 1pm. Allowed me to slowly and methodically apply for jobs I really cared about instead of thrashing in the wind. Iā€™ve seen that passive income takes a tonnnn of energy and investment to really get off the ground. So it might be worth skipping that unless youā€™re particularly passionate about your endeavor. Good luck! Be patient! Donā€™t be afraid to spend a little extra $ and buy French toast for breakfast sometimes. Youā€™re gonna get a win.
