regardless of your plans on the presidential election (bc i know and understand most of us are in a lot of complex places about if to vote in it), please at least vote in the local elections on your ballot! a lot of my job involves researching the far-right and iā€™m a leftist so please trust that iā€™m not trying to spew corny democrat stuff, i just see / believe that local elections tend to be neglected but are so important to vote in (school and library boards, ballot measures, judicial seats, hospital boards, and city councils!) for example with school boards, elections can mean the difference between having extremists push forced outing policies and bans on books featuring LGBTQ people and people of color, versus literally normal people supporting inclusive school standards and diverse library collections. unlike big races, local positions are much more likely to be decided by dozens of votes or less. even if you donā€™t have kids, rarely go to the hospital, have never needed/been in the court system, etc - please show up for people who do! and, importantly, elections still arenā€™t the end all be all - who is in office is a strategic opportunity but politicians will never be the solution to societal issues, and year-round support for mutual aid projects, volunteering, and community organizing is so so so important to participate in

- seconding the recommendation to grieve! ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹ i think it in someways can be worsened being in a society that is largely undergoing mass denial around things like rising authoritarianism, that the pandemic is still happening, militarized police, economic/social inequality, etcā€¦ so i think taking a moment to feel and acknowledge the validity of your feelings is valuable because society at large is just avoiding acknowledging any of this stuff, partly bc the government doesnā€™t want us to my other recommendations are: - donā€™t doomscroll! āŒ idk if i think tuning out completely can be entirely helpful because it might reverse psychology into worrying about what news youā€™re missing out on. so i recommend being more mindful of when/where youā€˜re viewing news. for example, i try not to scroll twitter past 9/10 at night and set my phone settings to not let me lol. so before bed and when i first wake up iā€™m not immediately looking at the news! i recommend this - readddd! šŸ“– i saw some other ppl recommend it and honestly it has helped me a lot. maybe look into things like speculative fiction too, but a book i will recommend is let this radicalize you by kelly hayes and mariame kaba. the book is intended for new organizers but i think it can apply to anyone just curious about organizing or people who organize. personally i have been more serious about organizing for a year and a half, and reading the book this year really helped me feel less hopeless. the idea that we keep us safe (which sucks but also empowers us to think outside of govt structures that fail us) and that we always have the freedom of our imagination to envision a new worldā€¦ āœØ the book is really good. i also recommend adrienne maree brownā€™s work, specifically her book emergent strategy and also her podcast and instagram. sheā€™s really great.

Our fuckass head Conservative Pollievre seems to be losing popularity after publicly siding with old man Musk but thatā€™s based on my media intake/ algorithm. The Liberals want to bring in a banker as their new rep cause Trudeau shit the bed as acting moderate Premier. I see what theyā€™re trying to do but theyā€™re also trying to redirect popular discourse away from the fact that our economy is fucked cause a handful of billionaires basically own the country - not cause we arenā€™t capping international students (??). Then thereā€™s the NDP which is actually trying to do something for working class people but theyā€™re so scared to give them their vote cause theyā€™re too busy fighting off the Conservative majority with their Liberal votesā€¦ Itā€™s a never ending cycle of garbage bro our government is so incredibly performative and moderate I feel like Iā€™m going crazy. I know thereā€™s a current wave of far right conservative governments sweeping across the globe and people are being thrown into a moral panic but theres still hope! Your vote matters and a moderate government wonā€™t fix anything. Band aid solutions wonā€™t address structural issues. Recenter real working class people in government philosophy, be empathetic, care!

Read this book!!! ā€œ ā€˜You have to give people who are new to this movement and to activism in general some way in.ā€™ For some people, thatā€™s going to a protest, or seeing a documentary, or reading a book, that gets them thinking, ā€˜Maybe I can do something.ā€™ And so no, I donā€™t believe one personā€™s vote amounts to shit. But it can get people in the mindset of recognizing they can fight back against the Powers That Be in some way.ā€

being traditionally cool is really quite boring and iterative, and itā€™s actually very cool and sexy to geek out about something you like or share bits of knowledge on a topic youā€™re passionate about

i had it for a little over a year until i was like wow this is actually terrible! i genuinely think it has negatively impacted society by ruining peopleā€™s attention spans, having a horrific algorithm, and most of all by the most mind-numbing or outright harmful trends - fake words that people now use IRL (ā€œunaliveā€), trad wife tiktok, shein hauls, body-focused fitness vids that encourage fatphobia and unhealthy habits, shallow political/feminist theory and queer discourse, ā€œalpha maleā€ podcaster tiktok, encouraging overconsumption in general, trends ruining local spots or niche thingsā€¦ the list goes on
